The "dump some loose tar in it, tamp it down with a garden rake and hope it will all be fine" repairs are back, in a number of locations in the "cycle lane" on the Slateford Road between Robertson Avenue and where I turn off at Hutchison Crossway.

The council have done a fine job of obliging you to completely leave the cycle lane at these points to steer around the lumpy mess that has been dumped in the lane

@Arrellcat - yup thats the crater on Wester Coates, thanks for that.

The entire length of the bus lane is a disgrace, like riding on the moon (one would imagine!).

I clarenced this before christmas along with a considerably larger though less cavernous crater on the same stretch of road at the junction with Murrayfield Drive. The latter was duly filled with a dump of the loose black stuff but the Wester Coates crater remains enormous. The large stones artfully wedged down the sides raise a smile on a daily basis-I've been wondering whether this was stage 1 of a repair job? Still, it's fairly miserable pulling out of the bus lane to avoid it- I'm cut up by offended drivers here on a regular basis.

To add to the Wester Coates misery, I have Clarenced the junction of WC and Wester Coates Terrace (where the Tarmac on WC meets the cobbles of WCT) as having a sizable 'step' due to the tarmac dropping but not the cobbles. This means that every night I have to swing out of the eastbound bike lane into the main carriageway to hit the junction at 90 degrees and get a jump up the step. Drivers LOVE me doing that as you can imagine...

Mayfield Road / Fountainhall may be getting fixed - the road was closed on one side, there was a JCB, there were tarmac machines, there were workmen.

The mega-cavern around the sunken manhole outside the old Donaldson's School was coned off last night, but no attempt had been made to fill the thing in. I then promptly got very lost trying to get in direction of Morrison Street. I'm not sure it's even possible now?

    It's possible, but entertaining :)

Coates Gardens, Glencairn Crescent, Palmerston Place, Torphichen Street, Morrison Street.

Or get off and push across the roadworks.

Actually - I'm not sure it that route still works as they've been modifying the routes across the Haymarket recently...

I find the best thing to do once with in the tramworks perimeter is to walk. Its not great on foot but its better than in amongst the lost, confused drivers.

'twas always Rosebery Crescent and Lansdowne Crescent prior to Palmerston Place for bicycles/buses but now additionall requires Palmerston Place > Chester St* > Walker St > Melville St > Manor Place > Atholl Place > Torphichen St > Dewar Place to get to Morrison St. The wee cut-through round the south side of the cathedral might save a minute or so.

*no right turn into Manor Place, hence the extra block

I came along the main road from Roseburn with the intention of meeting a friend on Rose St yesterday after work. In rush hour. I haven't been that way for a while. All I can say is, what the **** ?!?

Reported the shocking pothole up from Evans cycles on corner of semple st and east fountainbridge, assuming east fountainbridge crosses Lothian road and continues to semple st, else I may have fupped up

Traffic island beacon at junction of Marchmont Crescent and Roseneath Street (outside the Laidback leftorium) has been knocked over and parts of the concrete base across the road.

Finally decided to report the lumpybumpy road surface inside the hatched box at junction of Leven Street / Home Street / Tarvit Place / Gilmore Place.

A drain has been installed the wrong way round on Sth Gyle Broadway between Gogar and Gyle roundabouts.

Could be nasty if someone cycles over it. Reported via ECC website.

Update: The link at the top of this forum for reporting potholes is out of date. The current link to the online form is https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/forms/form/21/en/report_a_street_lighting_problem

That was about two weeks ago according to t'forum. As of this evening, the mega-cavern is still coned off. I did my Big Society thing and re-erected all the traffic cones that had fallen been pushed over.

Funnily enough was thinking about that this morning as I rode past it. Have also noticed another manhole is sinking further up, seems to be getting worse.

I'm hoping that Wester Coates is due to be resurfaced, it's quite staggering the condition it's in.

    Regarding the 4-way junction at Gilmore Place / Home / Tarvit / Leven Street. Reply received;

I refer to your equiry dated 31 January 2013 regarding the above.

We are aware that the junction of Home Street and Gilmore Place is in need of re-surfacing, however the works required at this junction are too substantial to be contained within the local revenue budget. The re-surfacing of this Junction was proposed by the Tollcross Community Council for the South Central Neighbourhood Partnership 2010/11 Roads Capital Programme and was selected by the committee; unfortunately this project was deferred due to essential gas works. It was again submitted for the 2011/12 programme but was not selected by the committee at that time.

This junction is inspected regularly by the Local Roads Inspector and remedial works are undertaken as and when necessary. I can confirm that a number of potholes were attended to on 3 February 2013 on Leven Street. We will continue to monitor this junction and carry out any make-safe repairs deemed necessary. It should be noted that because of the volume of traffic using this junction most works require to be programmed for a Sunday.

I hope this has answered your query, however if you would like to discuss further please contact <>, Area Roads Officer.

So. It would have been fixed 2/3 years ago if it wasn't for the interminable emergency / urgent gas repairs. Who probably made the surface doubly bad.

The junction at The Kings Theatre as all cyclists know has an appalling surface, especially right in the middle where you're in the process of doing a dodgy right turn trying to avoid on-coming fast cars. It's an accident waiting to happen and as the previous comment says has been this way for ages.
Just remember that if any poor soul does come a cropper on this one, the Council have been told and could be sued for negligence

When proceeding up/down Dickson Street and crossing Iona Street, the spacing of the setts, and the depth of the gap, is such that a bike tyre will fall inbetween and become trapped. The spacing is such that my 25mm-wide bike tyre became trapped.
This is dangerous as it causes pinch punctures and can throw the rider off the bike, it is also dangerous when trying to make a left or right turn, as the tyre becomes trapped and again the rider may be thrown from the bike.

Amazingly, the Mayfield Road / West Mayfield junction is being resurfaced. They may actually be fixing the venerable old-enough-to-vote pothole in the middle of that junction right now.

@Kaputnik, do you find that 'Clarence' responds faster (if at all) when you illustrate the dangerous nature of some of the faults?

I've noticed no correlation between highlighting dangerous faults and a faster response. (as opposed to merely-horrible-to-ride-over faults)

As with the Melville Drive debacle this week, it seems the only time you can get urgent action is when you identify and publicly harass chase specific individuals.

    It's a broken system.

Snowy, not sure if they respond "faster", but I like to include exactly why I am reporting it. My thought is if the council bod goes to inspect the setts they would probably look at them and think they were all fine and wouldn't cause any problem to a car. Council roads department seems to blissfully ignorant of cyclists and their needs I think you have to spell it out for them every time.

After a couple of weeks the flooded section under Granton Road was being sucked up by a truck this morning.

As of this evening, the mega-cavern is still coned off.

That was a week ago. As of this evening (Feb 18th), the mega-cavern is still coned off. I wasn't in any danger of hitting it because the surface of the road was sucking all my hard-won momentum.

Without much optimism, I have reported the horribly tree-rooted access path between Ravelston Dykes and the Roseburn Path to Clarence (I hope - she seemed completely baffled and befuddled by the road/path names I was giving her: "It's Ravelston Dykes" "but what's the road name?" "RAVELSTON DYKES").

It is on my new commute to work and although I survived it on my MTB today, on the hybrid it would be rather dangerous. And uphill is harder as it's very hard to pick a line at that gradient. Anyway, perhaps someone can fix it.

    GOOD

It's certainly a classic 'not hit for purpose' - tree roots and those pram trap barriers!

That was a week ago. As of this evening (Feb 18th), the mega-cavern is still coned off.

And as of this evening (Mar 6th), the mega-cavern is still coned off. It was suggested that it is a Scottish Water manhole, which is possibly something to do with the extraordinary delay in mending it.

The sharp-edged metal slab installed atop the giant crater around the manhole cover in the middle of the right-hand Lothian Road to Princes Street lane has been shuffled half-off due to there no longer being a pedestrian crossing there to intermittently slightly reduce the speed of vehicles when they hit the slab.

Reported the 4 broken streetlamps on the lower part of Leamington Walk (a couple of days ago).
They insisted on reference numbers from all 4, despite me pointing out that this constituted about 50% of the streetlamps on that section not working so it was pretty easy to find them.
Apparently, the engineers have no method for being able to test during daylight hours whether a streetlamp works or not.
