    (1) because fixmystreet is way more convenient, e.g. mobile phone app so you can report from the street; the council website reporting often didn't work for me even from the office computer.

    (2) Fixmystreet is a convenient public record so you can send the link to twitter, councillors and others if the council doesn't act. And you can post a link here to warn others. The council system is less transparent.

Another reported on West Coates, north side this time. Manhole cover is breaking up and starting to collapse; near the Cumberland Hotel.

@SM, don't disagree that fixmystreet is more transparent.
However the acid test is does the fault get fixed.

In my experience using the council site it does, using fixmystreet it doesn't.

I have to say my experience of using fix my street has been good, certaintly on some of the bigger things I've reported. Like Broken Manhole Covers. Have been fixed very quickly.

Some of the minor complaints are often ignored or repaired after a long time. But as it all goes to the same place I don't think there is a disadvantage to using FixMyStreet.

A manhole cover halfway down Comiston Road just before the Braidburn Valley Park.

This is now covered by a huge steel plate. Arguably not much safer than the defect because there's no grip stuff on the plate.

Cause for celebration - various problem areas on the southbound side of North Bridge have been fixed with new well-laid, smooth, properly sealed, red-chipped tarmac. Long may it continue.

Some resurfacing is being done on Corstorphine Road to fix the moonscape at the hospital and a bit further in to town. Long overdue.

Has anyone else come across the trench just before the start of the cycle lane on Torphichen Place, just where a right turning cyclist will drop into it? Hard to avoid if there are cars around. It's a nasty one, narrow and deep. I've clarenced it twice, but no action yet.

  9. Yes.

I clarenced it last week after hitting it in the dark. Its a nasty one I was lucky there is no apparent damage and I stayed upright.

Could try reporting it through fixmystreet.com

I'm not sure yet if this has a higher success rate, but it's far easier to keep track of things you've reported.

    Reported via FixMyStreet 18/01/2016
A nasty sharp-edged pair of potholes about a yard away from the kerb, and about opposite the bus stop on Polwarth Terrace.

I hit them while doing a good 20mph, and I worried for the health of my wheel, this despite knowing there was a pothole somewhere along this road, having hit it before.

I've been going pothole crazy on FixMyStreet, after nearly destroying the torpedo yesterday on a huge hole on Balcarres Street.

Kids on the pavement at the bottom of Mayfield Road with a lemonade stand.

Van on the double yellows at Ratcliffe Terrace...getting a ticket!

    Edit: wrong thread.

Hmmm... just been told by @edinhelp that I can no longer report faults with traffic signals by tweet. You have to phone up during office hours.

Disapointing to see such a backward step in resident engagement.

I guess they have their reasons...

I often report dead lampposts as CEC system makes it so easy but after I realised I would need to phone to report the squashed traffic lights at Maybury earlier in Feb I waited to see if someone else had.

Someone has suggested that I use Fixmystreet instead. Went on and found both the squashed traffic lights and knackered button both already on the site.

Having 24 hour access to a reporting system is key to me - (so I don't forget) - so this might just work.

I like the FixMyStreet app, especially as it's easy to also upload photos. I think it gets the same speed if response as reporting directly through the council website.

Big advantage is it's easy to keep track of what you've reported, and report again in a few weeks if it's not been fixed.

Reported today the series of potholes in the utility trench bandings on the cyclists primary line for the descent of Dublin Street. Also the deep one on the junction between Abercrombie Pl and Dublin St.

Just about to FixMyStreet the missing drainage gully cover on the Holyrood Park path up towards Pollock, which would be unpleasant to encounter on a scooter.

The trench before the cycle lane on Torphichen Place opened up again a couple of months ago and was fixed (sort of) but it's already reappeared. Clarenced again.

And I've also reported a nasty deep hole at the inbound end of Dean Bridge, just where it turns into Randolph Cliff. Beware of that one, it's hard to avoid without swerving into traffic.

I feel a wee pothole safari FixMySTreet-athon coming on. Anyone want to do similar?

Craigmillar Park to North Bridge corridor appears to have been shelled. Can I just report the whole thing maybe?

Nuh. Can't report anything bigger than a named street.

I've just received a reply from CEC about my report of the trench on Dean Bridge/Randolph Cliff

"Your enquiry has been inspected and has been categorised as not being a critical safety defect at the time of inspection. We will continue to monitor it for further deterioration and will take action if required."

This is utter nonsense - it's a horror. just yesterday I was nearly crushed by a van as I tried to avoid it. Maybe other people could try reporting it too?

Apparently, we've now passed peak pothole https://www.mysociety.org/2020/02/28/can-you-believe-weve-reached-peak-pothole-day-already/

The trench before the cycle lane on Torphichen Place has been fixed again, and this time it looks like a good quality repair, so hopefully it'll last better than the previous patch job.
In other good news, the trenches made by SGN in Stockbridge have been reinstated to an impressive standard. Perhaps they could take over CEC's pothole fixing?

Haven't seen the SGN repairs but IMO you can never tell for sure until a couple of years down the line at the earliest. And the joins will always be a weak point.

I think it was @Tulyar who pointed out the vital element of substrate compaction. No point doing a nice Tarmac repair if it's going to get dished as the aggregate settles.
