Few days in cologne next week at yet another food fair and despite the fact the expo give you free local transit I thought it would e a good opportunity to have a pootle about.

Has anyone here used Deutsche Bahn's Call a bike service, they bikes are lying about all over the place, and are activated using a dial-in code system. Pretty smart really, although it costs €12 to register then €0.08 a minute to use it seems quite expensive.

Would be €20 to rent a bike for 3 days, but i'm guessing there will be a deposit etc and the DB bikes are really quite convenient.

I was in Berlin five years ago but didn't see any in use.

Went on a Fat Tire Bike Tours trip - not cheap but fun/interesting.

having decoded the german registration site the €12 actually has €7.50 or 1 1/2 hr usage, There's also an android app that does all the unlocking stuff for you, so looks more tempting...

If only I can wrangle the registration!

So, have had a few days playing with the bahn bikes including the morning commute over the Rhine.

It's a great system, although it takes a bit of getting used to and there's not much margin for making mistakes (say if you type in the wrong bike number in the app you can't undo easily then have to call the German call centre and hope they can understand you)

But when it works, it works, the bikes are usually in the vicinity of where the app says they are but you sometimes have to scout about a bit as they aren't actually fixed to anything, just meant to be left with the wheel lock on at 'major intersections'

Cycling in Cologne is really lovely though, lots of bike paths on the pavements, traffic that understands its position in the road chain and it's not too hilly, although getting over Deutzerbruke takes a bit of legwork.

Seen more of the city this time then the two previous just by want of having some transit.

The bikes are full suspension for reason, very bouncy, kind of like riding a sofa balanced on a pogo stick.

THe one thing is, it's not hugely cheap €0.08 does actually add up, think I've racked up about €20 of usage :*) Still cheaper than renting a bike, and I don't have to worry about it getting nicked!

"lots of bike paths on the pavements"

Yes, I was there about 20 years ago, when the big Euro bike show was held at the Messe, and found this out.

There was urgent bell ringing behind me as I wandered along a narrow pavement next to a very quiet road.

Person on bike said something in a language I didn't understand...

After the man had passed I noticed a faint white line.

    Couldn't happen in Edinburgh.

    Perhaps just as well.

Think that trip was the first time I saw a 'bike channel' - for bike wheeling up/down steps - at the end of the long footbridge across the Rhine.

I have photos, but that was pre-digital so they are in a box somewhere!
