What links a corner of Holyrood Park and a farm lane near Whittingehame Estate in East Lothian? A similar link exists between the Tron Kirk with Arbroath Abbey as well.

William Douglas of Whittinghame was implicated in the muder of David Rizzio at Holyroodhouse Palace? That's a tenuous link between those two, but don't know how Tron Kirk or Arbroath Abbey are factored in.

That's impressive but not the answer. The answer isn't historic, it's geographic and it is almost literally a link or series of links.

    Smudge: "Golf?"

I like the way you think but no, it's not golf.

The second link is at the junction of Abercorn Road and Willowbrae Road.

well it just took a bit of creative Googling :)

The second link is at the junction of Abercorn Road and Willowbrae Road.

Kenny MacKaskill MSP (SNP) has his office there?

If I was to say that the second link is on the wall at the junction would that help?

I was wondering if it had anything to do with Orr's Folly, a war memorial and the Church of Scotland. I don't know, really.

Arbroath Abbey - decleration of independence?
Whittinghame - battle of Athelstaneford (saltire)?
Abercorn Road - Kenny Macaskill's office?
Tron - something to do with Bonny Prince Charlie if I remember rightly.

All tenuously related to Scottish independence - but not really one "thing".

The answer can be found on this page.

There is a theoretical line called the "Edinburgh to Whittingehame levelling line" which is/was used during geodetic levelling of Scotland for cartographic purposes. There is a marker for this line on the junction mentioned and there must be another in Holyrood park. Idea came to me to look in this direction because I sort of thought you can look up Abercorn Road into the Park and it might be something to do with sighting lines.

The full Edinburgh to Whittingehame line can be found here.

    I thankyaw.

Yes, that's it. I found that page yesterday when I was looking for information about Whittingehame. I'd never heard of it before but I've seen those bench marks often enough. Well done kaputnik.

@Arellcat I wish I knew what Orr's Folly is. As it's my surname I feel I have a sort of a right to know. But short of asking at the cottage door I can't think how I'll find out.

@Morningsider That's going off into some kind of weird Scottish fantasia.

Blimey, kaputnik. That's some impressive detective work, which alas my working day is too small to contain.
