ah, we thought we'd missed it yesterday (I got blamed 'cause I was out at the pub :( so, yes, will try to get along.

yeah you can't miss Bat night AND flying lanterns...
I wonder if the bats will crash into them and come down in a fiery ball of fur making the distinct crashing bomber noise from Battle of Britain movie towards the landing lights on the canal.
See you there then. I hope they have enough lanterns as they didn't have enough bat detectors to go round. Also I hope they have no metal in them farmers hate thatPosted 13 years ago # -
Thanks for the no metal addition to your post. I hate the lanterns with metal in them as they can act as traps for small animals.

we can always see about removing it from them if they do and create a fire hazard instead ;)

At a wedding I attended last year one of the guests had brought a job lot of lanterns for everyone to release in the evening. I was very dismayed to find that they were all the foreign imported cheap kind with white twisty wire for attaching the firelighters, yet no-one else seemed bothered and launched them off with gusto.
From EDP24 last year:
"
[The issue] was raised in the Commons by South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon, who has been contacted by local farmers, about what steps the coalition government was taking to overcome concerns.'Chinese lanterns pose a threat to farmers both because of the fire risk to standing crops when lanterns fall into fields and because the wire frames are cut into small pieces by harvesting equipment so that wire is incorporated into animal feed such as hay and silage, which kills farm animals,' he said.

"because the wire frames are cut into small pieces by harvesting equipment so that wire is incorporated into animal feed such as hay and silage, which kills farm animals"
Ah!
I knew they were an 'animal hazard' - but presumed 'direct' rather than 'secondary'.
Hope the Harrison Parkers don't have do any filleting!

Twice recently I've seen a floaty paper lantern drifting unconcernedly upwards from (presumably) somewhere on the Forth shore right across the flightpath of descending aircraft. Not sure to what extent lanterns (with or without wire) would trouble an engine but I wonder if the people who released them noticed.

I doubt they reach high enough and presume if they got into the landing flight path pilots would see them
We'll radio the airport tonight ;)Posted 13 years ago # -

"I doubt they reach high enough and presume if they got into the landing flight path pilots would see them."
They certainly do reach high enough, especially on landing flightpaths (my sister is an air traffic controller and I once asked her about it as we were setting some off from our garden).
Indeed pilots will see them. And so have to divert/abort the landing. Air traffic, needless to say, don't like them. If you're anywhere near a flightpath you're supposed to check with the local airport.
