Team up with a troupe of acrobats and get them to form an human pyramid-shaped human windbreak.

Unfortunately its not the act the suffers but the audience that gets blown away, and not in a good way.

have you ever thought about doing kids parties? they are indoors and there is a serious gap in the market...

Is there? I do balloons and stuff sometimes but I'm really more of a late night cabaret kinda guy. Doing magic for kids is hard too, they see whats really there!

as far as we can tell there is one magician who does stuff for under 5s and is really dire. and the one good music person (known to some on here) has stopped doing parties, so it is all people using CDs rather than actual music, which lacks something.

am sure kids parties are hard work, but....

  10. I thought I'd see if I could freewheel down Johnstone Terrace against the wind this morning. I'm not sure 2mph counts as moving... And that was slowing me from over 20 at halfway down.

Don't even get the benefit going home cos I'm riding to the shore at Silverknowes/Granton to meet Mel after work.

I was in Leith this morning and afterwards took the motorbicycle out along Granton Road, West Shore Road, Silverknowes and then up Clermiston en route to my work. It's very windy out by the shore on high ground everywhere. Nothing like early 2009 levels, though.

Was out at lunchtime. Pretty strong gusts but thought to myself, well at least it's warm, and it's not raining. And then...

I spent 3 hours investigating the wind by bicycle in East and Mid Lothians this evening. I can report back that it was indeed windy.

That's an interesting finding. I wonder what we'd learn if we all pooled our findings. I found that I had to push harder or use a lower gear when I was pointed into the wind than when it was at my back. Whoddathunkit?

@Insto - Get thee a single speed, then you have no choice but to push harder !

I thought there was sand in the BB this morning I was so slow.

Jings, that was a cold commute this morning! It was 7°C when I left the house. Shorts, tights, Goretex, gloves, and my lights. And Shimano MT42 shoes are not remotely waterproof. Maybe I ought to have bought the MT60s after all.

The MT60s are not remotely comfortable, though. Fortunately I was able to detect this in the shop whereas anth had to buy them and wear them for a few months. I got a puddle on the foot this morning which demonstrated that Tahoes are not waterproof, but if the price for that is being able to walk several miles at a time in them or not having numb feet from my toes being crushed, so be it.

Apart from occasionally wondering if I might wonder if it was a good idea to have forgotten my long-fingered gloves on the way home on the way in, it was nice this morning.

Fingered gloves were needed. Slightly thicker socks might have been nice.

I had an excellent pair of gloves 'windstoppers' - just a very light, comfortable shell, with no insulation. In a lovely extra small size. Lost one. Still have the other in case its mate ever miraculously appeared. Best gloves ever for Edinburgh cycling.

Ah now, I've never actually said they were uncomfortable. On the bike still no worries (and warm feet). Off the bike I can feel the cleat through the sole, but not to the point of being annoyingly uncomfortable. Comes down to different 'breaking points' I think.

I'm more sensitive to noise than other folk after years of bad neighbours before we moved (then moved again due to even worse neighbours); whereas I'm happy with shoes on which I can feel the cleats slightly when walking (though thinking on it, this morning, I'm not sure the problem has been as apparent...)

I wore my jacket, but otherwise still in shorts, summer shoes, fingerless mitts. I thought I had put my warm merino t-shirt on under the jacket, turns out I just wore a random grey cotton t-shirt that looked the same without my glasses on. Soaked up the moisture and then refused to wick it through.

"...I can feel the cleat through the sole, but not to the point of being annoyingly uncomfortable." (my emphases)

You sound like one of these people who makes loose-fitting shoes fit more snugly by pouring gravel into your socks.

My Northwave touring shoes are on the verge of collapse. All the rubbery/foamy padding stuff at the back of heel has fallen out and the cleats are now felt through the sole to the point of beginning to be annoyingly uncomfortable. I hope to get a few more weeks out of them before consigning to the bin. I think I've "only" got about 5,000 miles out of them.

Like I say, different people have different sensitivities. I have absolutely no idea at all how anyone could live in a flat, hearing their neighbours' stereos and kids and walking. To me they sound like people who make noisy neighbours more bearable by playing death metal at 3am through their iPod in bed...

Yes I can feel the cleat. That simply does not amount to 'uncomfortable' to me. I can't really change my automatic unconscious perceptions (which I'm quite glad about - if I found it uncomfortable I'd have to chuck out an expensive pair of shoes...).

Given the futility of attempting to find shoes-which-fit-which-are-also-waterproof, I was just having a quick poke around at overshoes and discovered that there are such things as non-waterproof 'knit' overshoes, to "protect your favourite race shoes" (presumably whilst being worn, rendering the box they came in unsuitable). Protect them from what? Sight? Fading in the sunlight?

wind very cold today, had fingerlessgloves on knew this was wrong immediately. However, as then got totally soaked twice, didn't matter, they dried quickly.
