I was going to put this in Wildlife Highlight of the Day, but then thought better of it.

A colleague has just informed me that as he entered the bottom of the Innocent Tunnel on Friday afternoon, in addition to the usual pile of empty bottles and Party 7s, there was a huge cloud of flies around a pig's head. Being a numpty, he didn't report it to anyone.

I've just reported it to the local team. Poor bloke having to send a team out to collect a pig's head. He says nobody else has reported it over the weekend, so either it's still there, or someone's taken a shine to it and taken it home.

Didn't see that, though the party evidence was clear. No glass though, that's the main thing!

    Oh dear...

Did notice a number of empty 24-boxes of Tennents tins at the bottom of the tunnel on Friday morning, with the cans strewn around all over the place. I don't normally go this way so didn't realise this was a common occurence.

I thought it was, passed it a couple of mornings ago and decided 'nahh, cant be.' and carried on. Where on earth did they get it from?

Some time in the past couple of weeks someone has painted a figure on the ground in the tunnel, like a chalk outline of a body. This morning on my way to work via the tunnel there were a few people hanging around at the gate at the top, with something that looked like either a fancy camera or possibly surveyor's equipment, although I don't think they were surveyors. I've just come back the other way and just outside the bottom of the tunnel is what looked like a metal frame with some sort of gas or electric meter attached (this might just be a random dumping though), and some people hanging about in the tunnel. I think they were the same people who were there earlier this morning. They had a little wreath of twigs or something at the side of the tunnel and they were burning it.

Do people who drive to work have this sort of excitement?

Kirst - I also saw someone with 2 tripods at the top of end of the tunnel. At thought it might be one of the photographers on this forum, but they seemed to be using a volvo estate so maybe not.

Kirst, I just passed a group of people loitering about in the tunnel with some sort of tripod set up. The metal frame thing outside sounds like some sort of generator.

    Here is the tape figure.

Is no one thinking of stopping and politely asking whats going on? I asked the site engineers if they were constructing a ramp access to the North Edinburgh Sub cycle line, and they confirmed this. If you ask this group if they are surveying the tunnel for structural safety reasons, they may tell you the real reason.

I think its an art project, there is a sign at the top of the tunnel saying 'You are here 1-3pm, please go down the tunnel. Place is lousy with photographers and stuff, I recon ECA photography tutors have to look at a lot of moody shots of the tunnel...

    Or "wee folding bike!"

I'm pretty sure surveyors wouldn't be lighting fires.

Perhaps it is a Roman surveying methods re-enactment group?

The bundles of sticks sounds a bit Lionel Blair Witch to me.

"I'm pretty sure surveyors wouldn't be lighting fires"

Its all about miss direction, away from being a nosey parker to being put right on what they are doing. Hence ask about something it could not be, to be given the actual reason.

A few weeks ago I phoned to report, of all things, a pig’s head at the bottom of the Innocent Railway tunnel and it was removed within hours, and I regularly report glass on the Innocent path which is always dealt with within 24 hours.

ChDot - the picture in that link juxtaposes the formerly fashionable olive green [or avocado] of the toilet pan with the now trendy Georgian Green of the front door.
