Going to be in Ottawa for a few days later this week. It looks like being a good place to explore by bike.

Anyone been? Any advice on cycle hire, where to go, cycling in Canada in general? Probably looking at just one day of cycling, so a bimble round the city is probably what I'm looking for.

    Came across this:

Not sure what people make of the new infrastructure but I was quite impressed by the info provided in the film. Can't imagine Edinburgh managing that.

Ottawa very civilised (and flat). Haven't been there in 15 years or so, but used to spend lots of time there. I've posted some things about cycling there previously. There's nice boulevards along the river. The Qside is nice, but hillier.

I went to Ottawa in 2005 for a meeting. It seems a really nice city. I hired a reasonable bike for a "bimble" from a hire place next to the canal below the Rideau St bridge. One day I went along the Rideau Canal and back along the Rideau River. Lovely, with cycle paths. Another day I crossed the Ottawa River and went around Gatineau Park (v large: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatineau_Park), which will be beautiful in the fall.

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to this.

Also did a quick search and there have been two "Meanwhile in Ottawa" threads, both concerning bike lanes!:

I did have a great day in Ottawa on a hire bike. Did about 60km in the end, so much for a "bimble".

About 95% of that was on totally segregated high quality cycle lanes (Ottawa has 200km of such lanes, or some super high figure like that).

Maybe it was the time of year, or the not brilliant weather, but I didn't see many people at all. Saw more squirrels and chipmunks than humans.

One feature I liked a lot was the yellow line down the middle. Everyone walks, roller blades, cycles on the right hand side of the path. Therefore overtaking is easy, the path never gets blocked and it's easy to predict what cyclists coming the other way will do.

I really think this would be a good idea in Edinburgh (Roseburn path etc.)
