Have been thinking of putting together a hack bike based on On-one's budget frames. I'm planning on running 700C drum braked wheels and would like to have clearance for 35mm tyres plus full mudguards. I'll have a hub gear, so need rear-facing dropouts.

It seems like both the Kaff and Pompetamine fit the bill. In fact, the geometry section of the website gives identical angles on both bikes, so I'm guessing they are deep-down the same (apart from the dropouts) and so I should get whichever is on offer?

I know at least that there's a Kaffenback rider on the forum (Anth) - any comments?

  2. Yep, I think they're basically the same bike, but with different dropouts. Personally I think the colours of the Pomp are now better than on the Kaff (though I think the graphics on the Pomp aren't as good as they used to be!).

I'd actually been considering one as a hack bike option as well - really really good value that you can't go wrong with. I reckon it comes down to colour preference. Which is no help at all is it? ;)

Doesn't the new kaff come with changeable drop outs? Don't suppose it really matters pick the nicest colour, make sure you don't get Coffee/Muck brown...

LOL. (un?)Fortunately, stock levels are, well, almost nonexistent. There are bundles of Kaffenback frames but none of the interchangeable dropouts (how useless is that?), while the Pompetamix / fork is like hen's teeth...

Hmm, I could have a Pompetamix frame with a Kaffenback fork though...

Have been looking at one of these for the front and either this or that at the back.

If I can clear it with the accountant, of course.

OK. A package should be here tomorrow with a Pompetamix frame amongst other goodies.

The forum will be pleased to hear that I've ordered it in white...

Cotic roadrat fork though, hopefully - mainly because it has more tyre clearance (42mm) and is comparably priced.

Typically, some stuff will ship next day, whereas I'll have to wait two weeks for the hubs, depending on where I get them from (and then build the wheels!).

Quite excited though. I'm going to try and do it completely myself this time...

    White is good.

A large box containing a lot of WHITE has arrived this afternoon. As someone who recently moaned about the wisdom of his other white bike...

Sadly, the forks will only be dispatched next Thursday, while the Sturmey Archer hubs are 7 days from the dealer, so we're talking mid-November by the time I can build them into workable wheels...

Should have ordered the frame last. As it stands, I'm thinking about all sorts of ways of building it up with recumbent forks and bits of my hardtail...

Dave, I have one of these in the attic that I bought as a replacement for my old road bike about 6 months before I disassembled it to harvest the body parts, if you want a borrow until your new forks arrive?

Well, I don't have a chainset either, or wheels (unless I used my 80mm carbon tub up front and my MTB rear), but if there is an unexpected delay this time next week, I may take you up on that!
