    In case anyone wonders who Jack Layton is, he is the late leader of the NDP, Canada's social democratic party, who took the party to the unprecedented position of official opposition earlier this year, then died of cancer this autumn.

    I drove to work today as my classic need to go to the garage in daylight as the lights need checking post respray. It was hell - I envied EVERY cyclist who passed me on Lothian Road (yes I tried to avoid Haymarket)
