Just came across this forum and thought I would say hello. I post a lot over on the forum at TrailScotland.co.uk

I usually ride in the Pentlands starting from Bonally or The Flotterstone Inn.

    Cheers

    That site looks interesting.

I was up at Bonaly a few weeks ago, it is certainly hilly up there.

Think they need some more trails added to the site.

    Here's one I made earlier.

There are loads routes you can do starting from Bonaly although most of them are now boggy as hell!

I like a not so off road route that has Bonaly as mid-point. Start in Balerno - go up to Harlaw on road, continue east until road ends completely [you will have gone past the turn down to Currie] - you are at a farm, there is a rough road round behind a row of cottages this is broken but improves later, takes you along beside Torduff Reservoir and down to Bonaly - lovely descents. From Bonaly, downhill all the way to WoL Path and then back to Balerno. A lovely circuit.

Ok, ok we are not always brilliant at spelling but the first rule on TrailScotland has a good typo, sorry to be bitchy but -

Advertising businesses or events on the forum is strictly prohibited unless aloud by the management.

I'm not bothered by this but my better half is a stickler for spelling and feels typos should not be allowed. Maybe I should have kept these mean thoughts to myself instead of uttering them aloud?

    Yeah noticed that this morning.

Of coarse it could be deliberate...

    "Back OT

    Hello"

Not sure about that. There's more to a topic/thread than the subject line.

    Although -

This lesson in English was really interesting. Thank you for showing us how clever you are.

I just signed up to this forum looking for friendly chat but if you're representative of the snot nosed pedants I can expect to find on here I don't think I'll bother.

I see it more as "attention to detail" than pedanty.

It's being abrasive and unfriendly to newcomers for no reason other than to show off how clever you are.

    Welcome

    We all make mistakes.

'We' are generally pretty tolerant. Don't pick people up for spelling on here - or grammar.

We don't look down on what people ride - or the fact that most people drive too.

Stick around, join in the fun.

I suspect that their pedantry and or teaching of the english language is aimed fairly at themselves, never seen or heard of any but good friendly stuff on here !
Give em a chance they seem good peeps !

Sorry if I sounded abrasive myself. I just don't like people who're on a Grusade on the Internet.

Poor attention to detail and ignorance annoys me too, but I don't feel the need to mock anyone for it.

    Anyway, fresh slate. Sorry!

Are people on here typically road-bound or are you into mountain biking too? I commute on an old Giant mountain bike but I've never actually done any mountain biking. I'd love to try some time

There is a small sub-plot that newcomers won't 'get' - and perhaps regulars too.

Quite a few people on here know each other - often having met because of CCE.

I think sometimes (me included) we can make comments know that the 'target' won't be offended.

    Fine line.

    Rules remain -

    "No personal insults. No swearing"

    Good question

Maybe time for new topic and a poll!

I started this two years ago with very little idea of who (if anyone) would join.

Think bulk of posters are commuter cyclists - using all sorts of bikes.

Quite a few have more than one bike (trikes too), again very varied.

There people who race on the road and do Audaxes and Sportives and gentle rides with their kids (and combinations of those and other things too!)

There are definitely people who go 'seriously' off-road, but I get the feeling that it's not too many on this particular forum.

Just for the record I'm pretty sure TrailScotland is not meant to have a space. Thanks for the unfriendly welcome from some of you.

I'm very sorry to hear that anyone thought they had received/someone else had received an unfriendly welcome. as the least serious cyclist on the forum, i thought we did 'inclusive' and 'welcome' rather well (I met anth by shouting at him over the canal wall one lunch time...).

But I am unsure about what was unwelcoming on this thread? okay, there was a grumpyness about Trailscotland's spelling, some punning and then an attempt to get us back on thread (which is also kind of an in-joke).

too many in-jokes? quite possibly that is the problem. where's our resident sociologist to tell us about ingroup and outgroup behaviour?

This thread confuses me greatly.... Who has been rude to who?

  28. "Poor attention to detail and ignorance annoys me too, but I don't feel the need to mock anyone for it."

I think as stated above none of it was intended as deliberate mocking - we tend to break into that kind of thing as soon as anyone here makes a mistook as well.

As for types of riding, I think we've got EVERYTHING covered here. Including recumbents, which is just weird.

What was this post all about?

"I'm not bothered by this but my better half is a stickler for spelling and feels typos should not be allowed. Maybe I should have kept these mean thoughts to myself instead of uttering them aloud?"

Then someone goes on to say

"'We' are generally pretty tolerant. Don't pick people up for spelling on here - or grammar"

So do you or do you not allow typos? It's a strange thing to start talking about when I all I was saying was hello.

TT - predominantly road, mainly commuting. However, when I do dust down the MTB it's the Pentlands for me - although I usually start out at Flotterstone. I love it up there as I can ride to and from home, enjoy real peace and quiet and even get a cup of tea from the fisherman's bothy.

The hill up at Bonaly is a killer - quite often end up pushing the very steepest bit

bikey12 - I don't think anyone was being unfriendly. I reckon it's fair to laugh at overly officious rules. I would stick around though - you won't meet a better informed, friendlier bunch of people.
