  1. Big area taped off with blue and white tape round trees, being guarded by a polis, this morning. Nothing in my usual news channels...

    they were there at 3.45am looking over the ground with torches(crap ones at that)in the lower section.
    that section was still being 'guarded' by an officer at 12.30

    A rape has been reported c. 3:30am this morning STV news article.

    I didn't notice Police at 1130 when I went across MMW but just came along Melville Drive and there are uniform interviewing passers by and some SOCO around in white suits. Large area of bottom of Leamington Walk is taped off. (mobile phone picture)

    I thought that installing lights there 20 years ago was supposed to stop this? Apparently (and Sadly) not.

    Dear Student/Resident,

    In relation to the recently reported incidents which have taken place in the Meadows, I write to highlight the measures we are taking by way of investigation and reassurance.

    Our local Safer Neighbourhood Team officers have been carrying out extra patrols in the Meadows, and we appreciate and recognise the concerns that students and residents have raised. I can assure you that dedicated enquiry teams have been set up to investigate these incidents. You may have seen in our press releases that we are not linking the two incidents in the Meadows at this time, although we will keep an open mind in that respect.

    Although some crime and anti-social behaviour does occur in the Meadows, I would stress that sexual crime is extremely rare. In response to views expressed by the local community with regards to Anti-Social Behaviour in the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links, the area and that particular issue, has been designated a 'Local Priority'. With that, we have increased foot patrols (both visible and plain clothes) and cycle patrols in the area. Given the recent incidents we have tried to bolster that further during the hours of darkness.

    In the meantime, I would encourage all people to adhere to basic crime prevention advice when walking anywhere during the hours of darkness:

    1. Where possible, try to avoid walking alone;
    2. Stick to routes that are well lit or covered by CCTV;
    3. Carry a mobile telephone and contact the police if you are concerned by anyone's behaviour;
    4. Consider whether you would like to carry a panic alarm. (These can be purchased at minimal cost online or from your local police station.)

    Please look at our website http://www.lbp.police.uk/crime_prevention.aspx for more information with regards to Personal Safety advice.

    Rest assured, we are doing all we can to trace those responsible for these crimes. In due course the police will work with the council, local residents, elected members, EUSA and other partner agencies to ensure long-term crime prevention measures are implemented.

    If you wish to discuss any matters further, please e-mail me your details on the address below and I will have a local officer meet with you.

    Regards

    Sergeant Steven Duncan

    the students have set up a 'walking bus' at night so people dont have to cross the meadows alone.
