    But apparently they aren't planning to put them on the outside of Buckingham Palace.

    I hesitate to suggest where they could stick these rings.

    I heard Margo MacDonald (MSP) on Radio 5 Live giving it laldie on this subject this very morning. Nicky Campbell nearly got himself snagged trying to play his usual devil's advocate. Margo is firmly against the idea and left listeners in no doubt that it was a London Games and that Edinburgh would see pip squeak from it.

    Putting them up on the castle would just be tacky and wrong. I have seen North Bridge suggested which wouldn't bother me. But not the castle. Just no.

    Your are pushing against an open door with me on this one. It might be worth starting another thread asking what the best site for the Olympic rings would be in Edinburgh. I am sure this will get those photoshop jokers going with some even more ridiculous sites for the Olympic rings. What about on the front of the Scottish Parliament or even better what about Meadowbank Stadium?

    How many metres/miles of cycle path does £200k buy? I'm sure I worked out a per-metre metric when they published cost of Chancelot path.

    That would be a much better "legacy" than some vanity display of Olympic rings in a city where the Olympics aren't happening.

  10. There was an interesting article on the Olympic 'legacy' in the Scotland on Sunday at the weekend. It had a spin, naturally, but there are things that get mentioned all the time like a £135M pot of money that is going to grassroots kids sport.

    Great. A legacy.

    In England and Wales.

    See it's to be administered by Sport England, the whole lot, which has no remit in Scotland - and indeed Sport is apparently a devolved issue.

    Ah. Found my calculations. £200k buys;

    1,500m of tarmacced cycleway and lighting (assuming roughly surfaced already a la Chancelot path)

    c. 3.7m of tramway!

    Probably seems churlish to refuse. Does seem like a big waste of money though. After all, are tourists arriving in Edinburgh going to take one look at the rings and then say "ooh the Olympics are on, lets go to London instead!". I think not. Especially since the tickets all went on sale ages ago and no-one got any.

    Mind you, one thing we do really well in Edinburgh is waste big money.

    @Min yes, but Edinburgh would do 2 of the 5 rings, for twice the forecast price and in time for 2014 Commonwealth games :)

    Might be better in Festival Square where they can focus on the big telly!!

    Surprised the Camera Obscura didn't specifically campaign for the logo; a set of rotating illuminated rings would go well with its tacky varicoloured roof.
