"Residents told the BBC some cyclists were using the road two or three abreast, were riding in the middle of the road and were aggressive to drivers trying to overtake."

Oh, the poor dears. How their apple carts must be upset.

I like the response from Redhill Cycling Club. You tell 'em!

I know that if I were in a protective metal box, I'd be terrified of people in shorts with nothing but skin and lycra to protect them.

Box Hill is a particularly lovely place and has lots of things of interest. It has an abundance of orchids and wild flowers that like chalky soil. There is lots of flint around and you can find bits that look like arrow heads etc. It affords a fantastic view over the counties, in short it is a stunning beauty spot just outside London. It has always been busy at weekends and if the summer is a good one is and can be heaving. It is also a very popular spot for bikers (as in motorised) to meet and indeed there is actually a bikers caff where they all congregate regularly. Lots of the cycling fraternity have used this for years and I don't believe that it is just because it is part of the intended 2012 Olympic route that it has become so popular. I absolutely loved going to Box Hill when I lived in London, and also the North Downs, just to get out of the city.

"In Richard Thompson's song "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", Box Hill is the location to which James and Red Molly ride on James' motorcycle"

I have been up and down Red Hill in Redhill several times trying to find the sustrans route to Brighton

At a richard thompson gig in Queens Hall a few years back I assumed the persona of a female glaswegian hairdresser as did my friend Mac [bearded sociologist] after each song we would shout out Vin-cent [ a popular name amongst Glaswegian children of a certain strata]. About eight songs in he finally played it - it was fab. After it in the gap between it and the next song we shouted out Vin-cent again. THat made him take note.

Great Wikipaedia article, yes so much history. I really hope that Surrey or perhaps Dorking council do not see fit to ban bikes because car drivers are complaining, which is presumably what they want. Their cars cause more pollution and damage to the environment than cyclists. The problem is that they are going too slowly up the hill, because if is steep and very steep in bits, vertigo inducing in fact parts are so precipitous, and are impedeing the car drivers progress. Bah! Strikes me that they are jealous as parking is limited, also roads for them to get around faster but are longer were built for them so they should go and use them and be impeded by others similarly all sitting in in tin boxes due to the sheer numbers of them. What struck me when on other parts of the North Downs was the ever present rumble and noise...yep coming from the M25, there was no way of getting away from it in Kent.
