What is the usual sentence or fine for such an assault? It seems to me that the driver got off lightly would I be right? I am thinking of a situation if you randomly started beating someone up. Poor diddums lost his job and his home...he should have thought about that before he attacked his victim. Actually thinking about it a custodial would have done him a favour, accommodation and three square meals a day.

Probably, But then he's an ex-copper. 'Chairman of the Bench Colin Thompson said: "It’s very sad. You’re not an ordinary person, you’ve been a public servant." '
So we'll let you off with a fine. After all, we're on the same side, aren't we?

'Whittaker-Axon, now of Broom Lane, Levenshulme, told the court: "I was defending myself. I felt he had committed an offence and I wanted him to be arrested and charged with it." '

No doubt that's the kind of statement he used to make when he was a plod in the Met. The coloured gentleman "fell down the stairs" on his way to the cells, the man with the broken arm was "resisting arrest", etc.
