The path follows the 18th Century Redcoats' military road and is being built by Forestry Commission Scotland.
"All we're asking them to do is to move it 20 yards further away."
Apparently due to the spam fritter I am not allowed to post anything with a gorram link (OR URL it seems) in it so here is the URL for the old fashioned copy/paste (No it didn't like that either)
www (dot) readability (dot) com/articles/qjkgl0if
If this doesn't work I will be most unimpressed

What are you doing to anger the spam filter?
Hmmm. Front page shows two posts but also indicates spitters as the last poster. Does that mean no-one else can see this?

Aaagh. I tried to post a linky version of spitters' URL and now I've been infected by spamfilter-susceptibility, as checked by logging out on phone and checking the thread.

The clicky version:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-15817477
"Protesters in a tiny hamlet on the banks of Loch Lomond are camping in front of diggers to halt the construction of a cycle path."

Yeah thanks cb - spam fritter obviously doesn't hate you, maybe it just doesn't like the readability site version

"maybe it just doesn't like the readability site version"
Mmm anything is possible.
I can give no certain explanation, but your first attempt only contain a link and no 'body text' so that will be why it got stopped.
I've been away from a reliable 3G signal 'til now, so didn't get chance to sort earlier.

"Andre Goulancourt, from Strathard Community Council, said: "The cycle path is a community-led project in the first place, though we didn't quite envisage it on the scale the Forestry have made it."
Cycle path or logging road??

Cycle path or logging road??
Well it could be worse, they might have an A road going past their house. I mean really, how much 'invasion of privacy' will be caused by the occasional cyclist that is not already being caused by the occasional rambler or forestry worker's off-road vehicle?

Must mean all cyclists are pervs

all cyclists are pervs
Well we are already deviants for choosing to propel ourselves around under our own power, rather than that derived from exploding rotten dinosaurs.Posted 13 years ago # -
Eeeeeeeexactly!

I keep reading this as 'Teen' protest and expecting an article with a load of Emos blocking the diggers...
Much strangeness. Unless the plans have changed markedly from what was agreed then the Community Council should have known exactly what to expect, and will have known how close the path would be to the one affected house.
And from what I can read it's less the path itself that's the problem with a lot of this, and more the works. Damage to the road? Surely can only have been caused by the machinery being used to create the path...

Is its following of the 18th century military road a bit of a red(coat) herring? No one's bothered by that? (Me neither.) Just the cyclists and their incessant window peering.
Posted 13 years ago # -
Red herrings in a media report on a cycling story. As if that would ever happen. Sheesh.

Wouldn't mind knowing where this is exactly. There are only about two houses in Inversnaid, plus a hotel.
The West Highland Way goes through there, plus presumably fairly frequent boat loads of folk coming off one of the ferries, so a few cyclists doesn't sound like too much of an issue.

Call Donald Trump - tell him he's to build a driving range there...

"a few cyclists"
NO
This is clearly the new cycle superhighway that is going to save Scottish tourism.

headline now: "Protesters camp in front of diggers to halt cycle path"
Posted 13 years ago # -
The path runs on the East side of the road from the end of Loch Chon almost to Stronlachlar, cuts the corner round the head of Loch Arklet and then turns West toward Inversnaid on the North side of the road - but up the hill a wee bit. I'm not sure what line it takes on the descent to the hotel. It looks like a pretty standard width/surfaced cycle path. I'm guessing the houses affected are at Garrison Farm (so called because it was built using the stones from an old "recoat" fort.
I saw them building some of it when I was up there a few weeks back. I thought it was pretty ironic given the incredibly poor state of the existing road and the fact that it's a wee dead-end anyway and I reckoned there must be little issue with traffic. However, the hotel is popular with bus trips so there's probably a wee convoy of the things leaving each morning and returning around tea-time.

I speculate as to whether the motivations in this case are similar to the ones in the carpet tacking of the Etape Caledonia? That is, a mix of 'no money in it for me/bunch of outsiders/cyclists are a menace/how dare they cycle on the Sabbath/what about decent tax paying motorists', etc. Oh yeah, and the cyclists might perchance spy a resident midge bathing one warm Highland afternoon.

To be fair, if it was my house and I felt that the path could be moved my 20m then I am sure that I would want the same.
Druidh, thanks for the route description; sounds like a much more serious project than I had thought. Any more info on this out there?
Is it going to be a tarmac route? Is Inversnaid going to be a dead end? Maybe link up with the ferry?
Posted 13 years ago # -
cb - I only saw it in passing when I was doing a little "CX" tour of Ben Lomond. It did strike me as a bit strange, but it does link up with the cycle tracks round the South of Loch Chon/Loch Ard and, eventually, Aberfoyle. I can see that it might encourage more folk to do the Loch Katrine circuit, knowing that they didn't have to cycle back on the road. As you suggest a link to Inversnaid also means a potential ferry crossing.
When I passed, it looked like a fine gravel surface, but as it was still being built (and taped off) maybe they will tarmac it - who knows.
I did a wee search when I got home but couldn't find anything more about it. Nothing on the Sustrans site either.
Some more route options...http://www.lochlomond-trossachs.org/looking-after/new-loch-lomond-water-bus/menu-id-483.html

INVERSNAID FERRYA 30 minute crossing will take you to the peaceful haven of Inversnaid, or allow you to visit the hamlet of Tarbet on the western shore, from Inversnaid.

I crossed from the hotel many years ago. All I remember is three of us tanking along the dead end thinking we were going to miss it.
Fortunately we didn't.
