Hit and Run Outside My Work (A Primary School)

One of my colleagues at the after school club I work at was knocked off her bike by a motorist this morning. She's not badly hurt, but naturally very shaken up.

She'd been waiting to turn right into the school, and as the oncoming traffic cleared, the driver behind her undertook, then swerved right and clipped her bike, knocking her off the bike into the oncoming lane. It was clear for long enough for her to scramble out the way, but he was gone.

It's pretty hard to square his manoeuvre with anything but a malicious attempt to teach a cyclist a lesson. There's no way he can't have seen her since he was held up by her in the first place, the presumable cause of his aggression.

She took his registration, though, and the police have been pretty diligent; came to examine her bike after they'd interviewed her, and are hopefully now throwing books at him.

    "She took his registration"

    Pretty impressive under the circumstances!

    Well done.

    Any witnesses?

None have come forward as yet, and since it was ~7.30, there would have been few to none around anyway.

Better hope the police find car soon and find a fresh dent/scratch.

I think often in these cases when the Police do catch up with perpetrators it is a lack of insurance or something they can get them on, rather than the reported offence.

I'm sory to read this. I do hope the police do feel his collar. Sometimes I think the police aught to turn up at peoples employers premisis asking to interview the perpetrator. Might think twice about it if their employer knows they have been naughty.

The important thing is that the police actually do anything at all. This is happening far too often.
I hope she is okay about getting back on the bike.

Oh dear. That is really awful. What a complete coward and this is serious assault, dangerous driving, and possibly even as bad as attempted murder. What a complete dickhead. Your colleague could have been killed by an oncoming car or at least been involved in a more serious accident (not that it was not serious enough in the first place). There really are some seriously mad folk out on the roads, clearly not right in the head.

As a minimum, it's surely a failure of 'duty of driver to stop, report accident and give information or documents' Road Traffic Act 1988 s170

Thats ideal but we know from experience that the driver only has to say they were unaware of any colision....

"In the event of being charged with failure to stop after a road traffic collision, if a driver relies on a defence of being unaware of said collision, this will be taken as an admission of driving without due care and attention"

Good news is she's back on her bike already, albiet asked for me to tank for her the first ride.

Bad news is no news from the polis.

We need some kind of masked vigilante. It's not like we don't all have lights to make a Batsignal...
