I have to go to QMUC from work tomorrow. I know NCN1 goes right there, but I can't find my Spokes Edinburgh map - although I do have East, Mid and West Lothian. *rolls eyes* I'll be leaving from Duddingston Park South - am I right in thinking if I head south, over the crossroads to the bottom of the Wisp I can get onto NCN1 there somewhere?

Mind out for glass near the under-A1-underpass.

@Kirst presume you intend to go on road most of way.
The junctions on Newcraighall Road aren't too much fun.
CycleStreets is WRONG - red route takes you onto the A1 - DON'T!
Turn right after going under the railway bridge.
Let us know how many of the solar lights are working on the path between Newcraighall and QMU.

I thought Cyclestreets was wrong and sending me onto the A1. I was not happy at that!

"I thought Cyclestreets was wrong and sending me onto the A1. I was not happy at that!"
I think it's actually legal (unlike main road to Forth Bridge), but best avoided.

Does anyone know why trees have been cut down between the cycle path and the A1 just north of QMU?

I saw something elsewhere talking about junction improvements (read: speedifying) related to a new development... it gave the distinct impression that it would involve removing the bus gate at the bridge by the station and allowing cars past the uni, so I assumed I had misinterpreted it.

They've been clearing the trees on both sides of the A1 here. Unfortunately, all the greenery around there looks to be living on borrowed time following East Lothian Council's decision last week. I'm not sure the development is that imminent though as the farmer has just planted cereal in all the fields to the west of the A1.

“
Concerns were raised about the proximity of housing at Monktonhall to the A1 and the impact of noise on them.
“
Good idea to remove all the trees then...

How does this fit with East Lothian's Air Quality Action Plan for the town (I guess it doesn't)?
The "City Tree" which was installed in the High Street last year as a desperate measure to tackle the air pollution is now stone dead.
Before it died:

I looked at the trees in Cameron Toll car park again tonight. Everyone just walks past them. One is so dead it's just a wooden pole propped in a metal cage. Our eyes are as dead as our trees.

I want a rule that city trees that are cut down can't just be "replaced" with sad root-stunted saplings that are then left to die in a concrete & fume filled desert having fulfilled the developer's"commitments".

Some glimmers of hope in the report on the new development in Musselburgh:
"new ‘cycle superhighways’ created using a railway line which runs under the dual carriageway and a bridge."

What would be great is if they straightened and completed the existing NCN1 route along the old railway bankings as shown in red below:

I noticed they've also chopped down all the trees a little further along the A1 by Asda.
