Doored!

Came home tonight to discover my youngest (5) had been doored...

My wife had cycled up with the two boys to collect my daughter from an activity at the high school and was returning about 17:15 past the parked cars opposite the golf club on Gilmerton Road.

The driver opened the door after the first two had passed, but hit the youngest, who was cycling beside my wife.

He's got away with a scuffed elbow, the Islabike has lost paint on the front fork (down to bare metal), but apparently the car came off worst with the corner of the driver's door being folded out.

    Driver suitably shaken...

Presumably being a steel fork, it should be repainted for corrosion resistance?

We've just discovered that we can't report it to the police yet - Howdenhall only keeps office hours...

  2. What makes that all the more ridiculous is two of the kids had already gone past - so there's no excuse for not thinking there would be cyclists there (not that there should be any excuse anyway).

    Sympathies to mini-Roibeard. :(

You could report it to St Leonards or Craigmillar. I too was almost doored when a cab driver flung open their door earlier today. I wish the wee man a speedy recovery and hope that this does not put him off cycling... Some hammerite in a closely matching colour for the time being.

Shame! Hope he's doing okay and the rest aren't too traumatized either.

"There's a family cycling past. I'd better not look before I open my door."

    Idiotic.

Hope the wee fella's not put off cycling.

The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me. I hope the poor wee soul is okay.

Very frightening for small new riders.... hope his elbow heals quickly and he gets back on bike.

He hopped back on to the bike and cycled home, so seems to have suffered no particular psychological ill-effects and the scuffed elbow is very minor - he got off very lightly indeed. Daughter seemed about more perturbed by a punishment pass on Friday evening...

She learnt a new hand signal from me on that occasion! Nothing like having the kids threatened to bring out real road rage...

I'm pretty pleased with the Islabike - I quite like the thought of the car coming off worst and we're very thankful that Joel came off best. It could have been much nastier.

Best advice would be take your children to school - not by car preferably.

Yes not a nice thing to happen at all, but in the grand scheme of things possibly best outcome achieved in a bad situation, with no lasting damage to your pride and joy or his pride and joy!

I hope your young 'un recovers quickly. Did you report it to the police in the end?

    Oh that's a great idea. :-)

Roibeard, you could report it to Stop Smidsey?

You can report all incidents at the scene by calling 0131 311 3131.

I remember getting doored once and ending up inside the car lying on top of the driver..... he started screaming... Still makes me laugh now. I bet he never doored anyone again after that.

hee, 'bodna that's possibly the funniest image I've had all week.

Condolences to the minibeard, the utter f'wittery of some drivers never fails to depress me. You need to introduce him to the wonders of beausage, a few war wounds on your bike make you look hard :)

Heh - glad to hear the driver will have to pay for repairs - yes I would put a lick of paint on the bike to prevent rust and big the wee man up about the win.
A friend of mine told me a story of him and mates bombing down Morrison street when someone in some shiny mercaudmwthing cut in front of them without indicating, on the phone and threw their door open. Unfortunately for the driver the guys were on their fully sus bikes and one of them decided to see what would happen...
The door came off and clattered down the road, the suspension cushioned the blow sufficiently that the rider didn't come off and the momentum carried him and bike through the door and the hinges were not taking it...
