    Cyclists 'urged to get insurance'

    from the BBC

"Not having a comprehensive insurance policy could prove costly, cyclists have been warned by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Department for Transport figures show accidents involving cyclists rose by 12% in the first half of 2011 compared with the same period a year earlier.

Cycle use is now around 20% higher than it was in the late 1990s."

Don't forget 3rd party insurance is included in CTC membership.

This is the insurance industry trying to tap what they see as a potentially lucrative income stream. They know that cycling is actually a relatively safe activity, so if they can frighten people into taking out policies there is relatively little risk of having to pay out and therefore large profits to be made.

"knocked of by courier co, who accepted all liability" which means they have to pay for the repair, regardless of any excess in their policy cover!

Some organisations offer insurance if you become a member like the London Cycle Campaign, Spokes (probably) and, indeed, as already stated the CTC. It is third party only. Many household insurers offer bike insurance but I suspect that this is for theft or loss of bike not injury or damage done in an accident. I like it Amir...very drole "cyclists urged to smoke by tobacco companies" that did make me laugh...

Yes, most home policies have a bike insurance option. Mine is theft or loss, but it has to be locked to an immovable object. £50 excess. Never bothered looking into comprehensive insurance. If I had an expensive bike, I might though.

I suspect the insurance companies are trying to divert claims from cyclists away from no win / no fee claims on car insurance policies and onto cyclists' own insurance, partly for income but mainly to cut the costs being paid to ambulance chasing lawyers, partly to help keep their car insurance competitive and partly to limit their liabilities.

Another interesting development (alongside the recent confused.com and carbuzz advertising / marketing about cycling) to suggest that cycling collision costs must be really hurting insurance companies.

@instography - regarding cycling collison costs hurting the insurance companies...could this mean that there are more claims being made against drivers, probably. Also bikes are worth a great deal of money now particularly if carbon, and also sustain more damage if hit due to lightweight materials being used, so yes perhaps it is hurting them more.

I had a bike stolen years ago and the copper who was taking the details was staggered at the value I quoted, and suggested that I could get a second-hand car for less!! I did point out to him that if it were a car he was taking the details for I might also stand a better chance of it being recovered. I never did see that bike again.

I thought about getting insurance for my Cervelo but the cost was restrictive to say the least! I was quoted £40 per month based on the bike value (to replace new) of around £4000.
To put that into context I pay £28 per month to insure my £15,000 second hand VW Passat, so how can they justify £40 for a bike, albeit I admit an eyewateringly stupidly expensive one?
As mentioned above CTC membership doe s seem a good way to go to cover liability though.

@Baldcyclist - similar situation for the Pino with regard to cycle theft insurance. Instead went for home insurance covering bicycles as well - took a bit of doing, but got what I needed, without silly restrictions on locks and usage.

Tandem riders appear to have had the same issue for some time, and came to the "stick it on your home insurance" answer well before I even considered it...
