THEY are voracious predators that have plagued remote islands and countryside communities.

But it seems the mink has now set its teeth on more metropolitan prey in the Scottish capital. Such has been the rise of mink numbers, Edinburgh City Council is to consider a £1.5 million plan to eradicate the species.

It is thought hundreds of the carnivores, which originally came from the US and are notorious for destroying native wildlife, have thrived in waterways in Edinburgh including Water of Leith, Leith Docks and the Union Canal.

Seems like a lot of money.

They are very slippery customers and it takes a lot to catch a mink, so I guess they will be employing a few people to do the job. I wonder if they came in on boats/ships from the US? Animal rights activists were responsible for releasing thousands of them into the countryside in England that were being farmed for their fur, with the resultant decline in garden birds which was noticeable. They have no natural predators and farmers that rear or keep birds of any description should be worried.

They'll surely be able to get some of that money back from making a few fur coats? Waste not want not...
