Stainless to replace rust pitted cheap chrome ones

Ordered 16mm - assumed that was total length not just threaded bit - though I suppose that makes sense!

Now my bikes will be heavier! (Good for mudguards + Nylok though)

    Arrived 21 hours after ordering.

I got fifty pan-head 12mm and fifty cheese-head 20mm SS bolts (and 100 nylon locking nuts) from Screwfix the other week for fitting a rack to the secondarybike and replacing the emergency flat-blade-head BZP rubbish which was all I could find in a rack-fitting emergency earlier in the year. Scary how quickly they're being depleted...

A good while ago now I ordered from Namrick about £60 of M5 A2 stainless steel Allen-socketed machine screws in various kinds and lengths - cap head, button head and countersunk, mostly 30mm and 40mm, plus Nylok nuts to match. What I wish I'd done was buy stainless steel M5 washers rather than 1000 zinc-plated, because those still inevitably rust.

Remember, if you're screwing small steel things into big aluminium components, don't apply copper grease to the threads as your anti-seize measure, but use something like MS grease instead. Copper grease will react with the aluminium and corrode to permanently retain your delicate derailleur adjuster barrel. If it's steel into steel, copper grease is fine. For the same chemistry, don't use small aluminium machine screws in big steel components, because they will also corrode beautifully.

"don't use small aluminium machine screws in big steel components, because they will also corrode beautifully."

Or big things - e.g. seatposts - unless suitably greased + worth checking they still move occasionally...

Interesting. Is that a two-piece clamp? An early example.methinks as most clamps of that vintage are one piece, with a single fixing (you have to strip all the gear off one side of the bars to remove).

I was cleaning my bikes lastnight and most of the bolts are rusty, so I've ordered a packet of these. Thanks for the link to the ebay seller.
