No reports of any significant travel disruption across #Edinburgh but take care on untreated routes & allow some extra time for your journey

Other Twitter reports suggest that there are delays on Forth Bridge, City Bypass etc.

    Presume off-road network not gritted.

Came down Leith Walk instead of the Roseburn, as our estate was bad (bad enough that I started reconsidering my decision not to bother with studded tyres) but I'll go back that way and check it out.

On bus as its my work Christmas meal today. may cycle this week depending on how I feel & how bad the ice is.

My street was untreated but I think there's a gritbin somewhere nearby which I'll investigate this evening. 23s were fine this morning, albeit mincing gingerly around roundabouts, particularly the un-thawed and off-camber quarter of the Lochend one. A little more brake-aligning this evening and the fat-tyred spare will be ready. All Fifers accounted for (the one who cycles reporting that the A8 cycle path is all crispy and untreated) but the bloke who lives in Livingston is late.

The bike path side of the path across bruntsfield links to meadow place seemed to have been gritted (at last it was melted), while other side was snowy. So at least one jogger thought the bike side was safer(!).

MMW etc uncleared, but not too slippy.

I'm unstudded too but found it all okay.

Ice on the Innocent was quite thin but already rutted so glad I put the spikes on.

Took my usual route up until Corstorphine where one folly of trying side street at Ladywell (remained vertical, but teeth were gritted and feet unclipped as dismount felt imminent) kept me on the main road all the way to work, instead of cutting through houses past school / station at South Gyle as I could see it was untreated and that's where I came off last year.

No more/less busy than normal, except Melville Drive which was backed up much further than usual.

Bloke from Livingston has arrived. "People who drive at only ten miles an hour on snow shouldn't be allowed out in the winter" or something like that. I should find out where he parks and stick a note saying "better safe than slidey" on his windscreen.

@custard - 700x25c Alligatorhides. To be honest there was no slidyness percieved underwheel - it was frost rather than ice - I think more of it was to do with fear of sliding!

None of the sections of Broomhouse path that I could see have been treated.

Pavement from Roseburn to Haymarket had been cleared quite effectively.

Custard - my experience of last year was it was best to stick to wherever buses had been / were going to go.

    My commute?
Ab fab... walked out back, fed birds, put antenna back up (was down as a precaution during the high winds), went out front, cleared path/drive and paths in front of neighbours houses then helped next door wifey with a non-starting car (she jumped it ok but was worried about her alternator so 2 minutes with a fluke showed alternator fine just battery flat.)
Back inside for a brew and a heat. Excellent way to start a Monday :-)

ps. a little smugness is allowed, I was working all weekend ;-)

Sheets of solid ice around the place early this morning, formerly puddles. Had the studs on so no problem. Main roads all gritted, really a breeze. Spotted from the train big tailbacks of stationary cars north of the Forth road bridge just before 8am, but I expect that is normal.

Noted that mid Fife looks pretty white: combination of light snow and heavy frost.

Dundee council have been very active with gritting and salt: even the bike paths. Just one stretch where there was still white thick frost and a powdery dusting of snow.

Dashed parky mind you, wore my sheepskin biker jacket today!

@smudge - Hams are obviously kindered spirits with cyclists, prioritising the checking the aerials and antennae are well after a bit of a blowy spell.

Didn't take the coxwean out this morning as I wanted to test the council preparedness. (Read: None)

Through Victoria Park was frosty, slid when I pulled on my brakes to check, Ferry Road to Roseburn was again very white in parts but didn't seem to slippery.

'Did a mainer' the rest of the way, didn't want to try the RBS paths (and was rather late!)

Very icy along the prom this morning,a nervous and tentative ride. On slick tyres, still trying to convince myself to fork out the ~£70 on studded tyres. Couldn't fully decide whether it was better to have the greater risk of falling on prom or smaller risk of falling but potentially worse consequences on road.
Disturbed (when I was on the road) by the number of cars willing to pass within an arms length in such conditions.
Seemed to be far less cyclists around today.

I came in my normal route today, Bridge > B800 > Back roads past Queen Lizzie Yards > A90.
Aside from the back road bit it was mostly fine - it was light! - there were lots of black ice patches where puddles had been that wouldn't be visible at night.

Debating with myself whether to go the longer (but mostly lit) A8 to Newbridge, then B8000 to the Bridge. Not looking forward to the cycle path on the North side of the bridge though, that was a bit sketchy on 23s this morning.

Roads mainly damp on way home. Ice at edges where there's been no traffic. Broomhouse path "clear" but had a sheen of black ice / frosty stuff on it. Assume it's just melted during the day rather than being "treated".

Bit scary coming back home tonight. Didn't help knowing the temperature!

Roads from school to Bike Works were all salted, so no fuss there.

Bike across shoulder again on way back from BW, so I was either walking or, when on Meadows/canal, so slow I could easily have been overtaken by a jogger.

I crunched gently through all the ice with my spikes on the way back. They don't make me ride any differently through ice (ie any less carefully) but they make me feel more secure while doing it.

Yarp, I have no basis for comparison since I haven't ridden on ice before, but with the Winters I'm more worried about losing a stud more than I am about...

    Hang on.

Maybe that's it? Maybe those ickle tiny screwtips can't possibly make the slightest difference to 90kg of bike and rider's chance of slipping on the ice, and the entire thing is a psychological trick that conditions the rider into smooth conservative cycling style with 40km of Pavlovian Rice Krispie arsonist water ornaments?

Managed to lock the back wheel during a skid on black ice on a dark, downhill part of cycle path in Dundee on way home. Luckily did a speedway type manoeuvre to slow down, did not come off. I think the spikes helped to stop me: with slicks or even Marathon Pluses on I reckon I'd have ended up sliding on my backside down the hill.

Made train safely, only to be subject to a three hour delay (on a 1h 15 min journey). Seems someone went under the train just before Kirkcaldy station. Terrible thing to happen to anyone.

We were eventually evacuated to another train which pulled up alongside. They used the wheelchair ramp as a gangway between the open doors of the two trains...

Though it also felt incredibly slow compared to normal-bike my fat-tyred spare bike felt distinctly unprecarious on the frosty sub-Crag path this morning, as fifty fewer PSI and fifteen extra tyre-width-units ought. The slowness is partially down to the squeakiness of the brakes, which are effective but embarrassing at high speed, resulting in attentuated speed to reduce the need for squeals.

Wheeled bike out this morning to discover I'd managed to pick up a slow flat last night and the front wheel was running on the rim. As the train I connect with is half hourly, I had a pleasantly relaxed tube change complete with cuppa in the comfort of my front room.

As far as 'visitations' go, can't complain!

made a schoolboy error of going the innocent this morning
thought i would give it a go and see if the rain had melted the ice
first part was dodgy and i decided that if the next part was icey I was turning around to take the road.
only made it a few metres in before i was A over T :o
few bruises and a sore knee but still alive

    Posted 12 years ago #
  30. It's astonishing how long that path stays icey. Main roads today were even more clear than yesterday.

Anyone noticed less fewer cyclists the last couple of days?
