well not really. more a collection of bits bunged on a 2nd hand frame

picked up a Boardman Pro HT mountain bike frame.
    very light.

probably putting on my old but hardly used XT taper crank set for now
    SRAM x5 rear mech
    XT 9 speed cassette
old but hardly used SID race forks
    easton seatpost,stem,bars
either Avid cable discs or one cable and one Magura julie rear (other Julie has stripped caliper threads)
    Mavic crossroc UST wheels

    couple of questions
the Boardman has an oversized headtube
I assume I need a tapered spacer for the top?
Am I going to have to cough up a tenner for the likes of this?
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/eXotic-Carbon-Conical-Headset-Spacer-25mm-height-1-1-8-/190609820925?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item2c613b0cfd

my XT front mech is 31.8 and as such too small for the Boardman tube.
can I run a 10 speed compatible front mech on the 9 speed set up? eg
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=52285
Im thinking ahead as the frame has an external BB fitted now (grrr another tool to buy for removal)
so when funds allow i may go 10 speed or at least a hollowtech crankset

    cheers

For a front mech I don't think it's critical. Is there a difference in chain width between nine and ten speed-approved chains? If so, even if the chainrings on a technically-ten-speed-compatible chainset are slightly closer together than those on a technically-nine-speed-compatible crank it's the shifters which tell the mech how far sideways to shuffle with each click...

from googling around the 10 speed is a wee bit narrower but the internal dimensions are the same
Ive managed to dig out an old XT rear mech which seems serviceable but is missing its little cable boot thing.
probably be okay and means I can run xt shifters front and rear

10 speed chain is fractionally narrower than 9 speed chain is fractionally narrower than 8 speed chain.

I run 8 speed cassette and chain and rear dereailler with a 9 speed front derailleur on a 10 speed crankset.

You can mix and match derailleurs easily on a double because it only has one step to make - the extra rub you might get with the marginally narrower derailleur guides is not noticable in my experience I'm able to use full range of big ring and cassette with no rubbing, and most of the small ring and the lower end of the cassette.

It can be fiddlier on a triple as there are 2 steps to make from granny to big ring, so more potential for gear combinations that rub.

According to the relevant Shimano techdoch, you can only get "SM-AD17M Clamp Band Adapters for M-size / 31.8 mm (1-1/4")" and no bigger for a Deore XT front derailleur.

I have an external BB tool for Shimano/SRAM hollowtech-type that you are welcome to borrow. They cost about £18 I think, so would save you shelling out.

Not familiar with tapered head tubes. Seem like a silly idea to me!

@custard good LBS can look up the shimano catalogue and order any random replacement component you may require. One of Shimano's redeeming features is how well organised and catalogued their technical documentation / spare / replacement parts are.

cheers for the offer but I'll probably buy a tool and thats it bought.
as for the headtube arrangement. i dont really get it either
I didnt really think about it before hand
it just seems weird having the steerer in a big void and then centred/held by a spacer at the top?

    Okay then
got a BB tool from Halfords (listed as £13.99 but they had £12.99 on the shelf)
    front mech,cables and outers ordered
Xt crank & taper BB fitted
    rear mech fitted
    wheels fitted
    rear Magura fitted
seat post and old WTB rocket V saddle fitted
    fork loosly fitted

now for the blimmin integrated headset
so I wasnt sure how it would fit and ordered a conical spacer
arrived today and i bunged it on
fitted the spacers etc but it didnt seem right
    way too much movement
so i did as i should have one the first time.
stripped down the boardman hybrid for a looksie
so I shoud have other components for the headset
2 parts to make up the top section.
    as per
    http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/have-i-got-all-the-integrated-headset-parts-i-need-advice-please-incl-pics
so am i likely to be able to source these or are am i looking at buying a complete headset (grumble, grumble)?

    cheers

    back again
my boys asleep and i got a chance to have a better dig in the hybrid vs MTB

so really i am missing a race from the top & bottom of the cups(no idea if these are the correct terms)
then on the top a spacer/reducer
then a compression wedge type piece
so really all i have is the cups that are pressed in the frame

    that sound right?

so being if thats the case, buying the missing parts is really going to be more than buying a complete headset and getting the parts i need?

wow, long time since I looked at this :o
    bikes almost done
    I fitted a new FSA ZS-3 headset(as fitted OE)
I had a carbon cone spacer whih I fitted but i dont like its seating
so I'll swap out the bling carbon one for OE FSA.

crossrocs are fitted with old UST tyres
though I fitted tubes as they really are old and im dubious f the rubbers degredation

I fitted my old EA50 monkey bars, stem and seatpost.
though I think a shorter stem might suit the bike
100mm felt a wee bit stretched. though Ive still to fiddle with the set up.
bought some 2nd hand Hope X2s,braided hoses & rotoers for £140 which is a good price.
fitted my old Sids, though I will be swapping these
Im too heavy for them and have got used to my other forks with lockout
probably a set of Rebas when funds allow

old lightly used,9 speed XT taper cranks fitted
old XT rear mech, again lightly used
old XT shifters.unfortunatly so old they dont have removable displays. which is really needed with the Hopes

Im not sure on the 10 speed front mech. the chainline doesnt look right and gears werent quite right on a short test run today
ordered a 9 speed (now reduced!) and will shelve the 10 speed for an inevitable later 10 speed upgrade
if its not the front mech, then its the rear
    we shall see

I'll need to order a saddle as my WTB rocket is far more work than i recalled :o

having been off any bike for 2 months, and much longer from an MTB
it was very weird jumping on the MTB frame
its not set up right for me yet but just the whole position seemed weird

    pretty much finished
needs a bit of tidying up on the cables/hoses and the likes
I'll wait and make sure its all working first before worrying about the trimmings
