"all the good people still need beanz and pizza and diet irn brew !"

@splitshift before we eat dinner, we often give thanks for our local food producers (and other friends and constitutive communities including 'mummy's bike buddies', as well as a warm flat and roof over our heads).

Tonight will remember to include all those who make sure the basics get on the shelves at Scotmid, Tesco et al.

(nb: this is not so much a religious thing, as an attempt to make sure that the kids don't take our 'good luck' and comforts for granted)

Very good. Wonder if it would work for kids who just think food = supermarket, don't know where eggs come from etc.

    (Answer - near Duddingston...)

I'm back to disappointed, but at 7am the wind meant business.

Afternoon off work for me, since the schools are shut, partialyay. I say partial since unless my sister=flatmate is working from home I'm going to stay there in case the pretty exposed front windows blow in and I have to rescue stuff.

"Currently it's a bit windy, but not much worse than some days we had last month and in October. However it is supposed to get a lot worse by 3pm."

It'll be interesting to see how this looks by this evening -

    @ForthRoadBridge

"Storm force winds have come earlier than expected - just had a gust of 84mph so bridge is closing"

    and then shortly afterwards:

"Bridge closed due to very strong winds (10:36 UTC 08/12/11)"

Scotrail website is overloaded, and they're moving to low res/text version. Stuill overloaded. May as well just head home now...

    Erskine Bridge also closed.

Would the last person out please turn off the lights and lock up, thanks - Der Management.

Cyclists are really struggling. Just seen one woman blown into the kerb (that could have been worse) and one guy just get off and walk.

We've just heard from our store at Glentress that the Rangers are recommending for people not to ride today due to the danger of trees coming down in the heavy winds. The access road to the Buzzards's Nest carpark is also still closed due to snow/weather conditions.

A couple of colleagues who live in Fife decided that seeing as they've shut the bridge, they best try and get to Fife anyway. Not sure why?! They'd be safer at their desks doing work in my opinion...

Anyway, en route to Kincardine and are now stuck on M9 due to lorries tipping over.

Motorways really aren't the best place to try and escape the zombie apocalypse.

Police advising to avoid all travel in Central Scotland and Lothian and Borders areas between 14:00 and 21:00 due to winds of 90mph expected.

As long as LB can get through i'll be fine. Shame they won't take bikes, a 90mph tail wind would be great fun... Briefly.

"1136: Police advising to AVOID ALL TRAVEL in Central & Lothian & Borders areas from 2pm - 9pm due to winds of 90mph expected."(BBC)

Even if they changed all the matrix traffic signs to "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? STOP IT! IT'S DANGEROUS. YOU'LL BE BLOWN INTO A FIELD AND SAVAGED BY CATTLE." people would still insist on trying, though.

Once a 90mph tailwind has helped you accelerate to 30mph it's then only a 60mph tailwind as far as the risk of being puffed over the top of the handlebars goes.

My little'uns will be leaving school in a bit, but I'm not too worried as the short run home is pretty sheltered.

Anyway, the youngest has incredible balance - I've seen him blown sideways on the bike without even putting a foot down. Yes, the bike was sliding/hopping perpendicular to the direction of travel, yet he remained upright.

Clearly he hasn't inherited that from me!

Have you done a Zombie Apocalypse design, Kaputnik?

I passed by a chap working on a tree in Morningside Park with a chainsaw on a 10 foot pole. Absolutely the man to find...

My sofa is very comfy and the draw on the stove's creating a fine heat. Dare I risk a trip to the woodshed for more fuel? Storm force dilemmas!

@insto Send the boy. Tie some string to his belt if you're worried.

Trees in Rutland Square looking a lot livelier now. An aircraft visible behind them has a ground-relative speed much reduced from normal.

Work, which gave us only two hours off during the worst of the snow last year, has just recommended that people worried by the wind leave now, first discussing with their manager and making up the time at some point.

Just participated in the mass evacuation of my son's primary school. On the way home, noted that rose bushes in nearby gardens, which have flowered because November fooled them into thinking it was Spring, are having their new blooms blasted to smithereens by the wind. A bit of lead flashing has come off the skylight in our stair and is making a loud rattle on the glass. I hope the skylight will survive the coming storm!

UoE is sending out notice of 'no travel' after 2pm etc, but 'This does not mean that the University is closing'

Actually, other (nmore sensible) bits of the UNi are telling all staff and students to go home...

    love the joined-up-ness
