Hmm, kinda have to come in from Ingliston, will take it slowly. Are the sidewinds the problem or is it a straight westerlish?

I'm glad I'm working from home this week. Was supposed to run some errands on the bike this afternoon. Took a look out of the window, and decided to postpone until tomorrow...

"Tay road and rail bridges shut!"

Oh joy. Was in Dundee for a meeting. Was lucky to catch a train back but going very slowly via Stirling.

As I was walking my charges up the road, I looked by chance in a front garden and saw what I hope was an amateur piece of conceptual art, but I fear was what it appeared to be: a slate dislodged from a roof and standing upright, suggesting an ominously deep amount of it stuck in the mini-lawn of the garden.

Ride home was pretty fearsome, but since the wind was in my face I was going so slow that the crosswinds weren't hairy.

Be careful out there, danger of black ice. In our road it's so bad that I've put of the commute until later. Looks wet but is ice.

At the risk of sounding like a stealth marketer for Schwalbe, I was hugely impressed by my studs this morning. I didn't even realise it was icy until I was at the office and nearly slipped while walking across the car park.

Last night's ice hasn't gone, but the rain's melted the usual barometer of frosted windscreens.

I was just about to say that I didn't think it was at all icy, but on second thoughts, maybe it was and I didn't notice (worrying!).

Schwalbe sent me a fistful of replacement studs, so I'm now running a full complement again. It will be interesting to see if I repeatedly lose the same studs or if there's just a gradual attrition from citycycling...

  18. Walked in this morning (bike was left in the office over the weekend) and thought it wasn't icy at all until I got to the Meadows and had a tactical detour via PY. Very icy at the MMW crossroads and on the main east-west cyclepath (and ped path for that matter). I can imagine I might have been caught out if riding...

Icy still on Chancelot Path (some nice chap called out to me "watch out ahead" while I was half way along), and at Five Ways I saw two people come off their bikes within about 30 seconds (the second chap fell off despite having seen one woman's bike on the floor, and a couple of us calling out "watch out it's really icy"). The little hill was sheet ice; catching people out because the rest of the path was pretty much fine.

I cycled along the Ferry Road Path westbound telling every cyclist that passed "watch out five ways is really icy" - hope it made a difference!

I have called Clarence and updated my previous "job" to say that it's still icy on Chancelot Path and that Five Ways is dangerous.

Hmmmm...I had no problems at all, coming through around 9am. I did pack my ice grippy things in pannier in case I needed to disembark though.

Not at work today but went delivering Christmas cards earlier and it's absolutely treacherous here (on foot anyway) with rainwater over ice.

I didn't really notice this morning, the estate was really icy last night though.

  23. The streets around our place have been awful at night, but perfectly clear by morning. The worst bit I came across was actually in the depths of Quartermile after visiting PY. I wondered why the schoolkids were walking on the narrow road instead of the contractor-inserted wooden walkway bit at the side in place of a pavement. Until I got a few yards down it and realised I could icy-slush-skate all the way.

SRD, at 8am the crossroads on MMW was icy enough that a couple of pedestrians almost went over.

Main roads clear on my route. Colleague who comes in backroads from Cramond to Gyle said he had weird scenario of water sitting on top of ice or frost making it hard to work out what sort of a surface you were actually cycling on.

Some cyclsts were walking the Tesco path due to ice this morning. As already mentioned, Chancelot was impassable on bike (in my estimation). Five-ways was hazardous, I witnessed one cyclist down - who told me he was turning round to go and get his car! I similarly warned westbound cyclists of impending ice at the five-ways junction. If it carries on like this I'll be on the road.

At 5ways I saw a woman walking with the back wheel right out of the drop-outs (it was being dragged along by the chain). Really wanted to stop and help but was running late for work.

Sounds like carnage. I was even thinking about getting studs for my better half, but she'll soon be commuting on foot.

I came off twice this morning, firstly at 5-ways then again going west at the sharp left turn just after the ferry road bridge. No major damage apart from a ripped rain jacket.

I normally stay on the road going to work, mainly to avoid the mud the paths, however, this morning I was running late and didn’t fancy navigating the rush hour traffic through town.

Lesson learned though – pay more attention to the weather forecasts and do not ride 23mm tyres on untreated surfaces!

If it helps - it will with the ice problem at least - it is due to warm up a lot towards end of the week - into the giddy realm of double figures!

What a surprise that the council are utterly, utterly failing anyone who is so selfish as to choose a non-internal combustion powered form of transport.

Path at aiport/A8 roundabout & section to RBS again very icy & slippery again this morning, spiky tyres slid then held at one worrying moment.

  30. Yes, it has to be said, the roads have been beautifully gritted. We've even had at least one down our street, which is a simple, short, not-going-anywhere-really street (with surprisingly little rat-running).
