This could get way bigger than the Innocent can accomodate. We could make some massive light display somewhere. Holyrood park?

  5. The only thing to remember is "Don't cross the streams!" 80s movie-tastic! Can someone leave burning tyre tracks and we can cover Back to the Future as well?

@wingpig: I reckon the way forward for helical motion is two of those LED paddle panel thingies fixed back to back and set on a string.

I'm now trying to think how we could simulate the burning trail... With out petrol.... or a flux capacitor...

Used disposable barbeque with paper stuffed in the wire dragged after bike? More sensible: mounted on suitably fireproofed skateboard or trailer.

Actual sensible answer: String of fierycolour lights loosely set in ball at bottom of stout garden wire which is then affixed to bike so that it drags on the ground. The motion of the wire ought to shoogle the light stringball around well enough to look jaggy.

You could just make a fire torch and drag it behind the bike can see nothing that could go wrong there.........erm.
These photo's look ace by the way.

"I'm one of the Harrison Park mob." Lets get backpatches made up!!!!

Anth, top marks for those luscious photos!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but you know, we cyclists all create a wee mini-Tron effect just by having a few bits of reflective stuff in the right places on our bikes.

Who new Marathon Pluses were son effective? As for that lovely old Carradice, I'm glad it has that big red/orange triangle. The biggest surprise was the saddle. I did wonder if the red dots had any function...

Eureka! At home with the folks and I chanced upon those tubes you use when at the golf practice range to pick them all up. They're made of translucent plastic and light up along the length fairly nicely when you drop a couple of bike lights down them and it's the work of seconds to bungee them to a rear rack.

It's raining now, so I'll wait till tomorrow for more, but I think that might be the cheapo way forward.

Muttergrumble. Note to self: next time, don't leave the charger for the camera at home.

My next experiment was going to involve plastic litrejons, formerly of milk, which ought to light up evenly enough and affix pleasantly on rider, frame and rack wherever best suits, but I'm letting my wee electrochemical pal sleep until Hogmanay.

This post may contain one Dune reference.

I see cabin fever is setting in already in rural Tayside: we're not even at Hogmanay yet! :-)

    Nice pics though, very impressive!

  17. Y'know, I can't believe how immensely stupid I've been - just reading on another thread (spotted) about someone looking like they have a lightsabre on the back...

I have a lightsabre (yes, I am a Star Wars geek). Red Vader sabre with proper light up noise and everything. Right, that makes the decision for tonight's photo challenge.

Saughton BMX park for some aerial work, anth?

Might need a recce to see if it's a nedpit of an evening, but I can do that easily enough.

    Posted 12 years ago #
  19. Sounds a fun idea! Something strapped to the back of the MTB - can't claim I'll get much air. Of course some night BMXrs would maybe oblige...

That even light distribution is lovely, especially the crisp end of it.

I reckon you can beef it up some with a spare rear light gaffered onto the top of the sabre and pointing down to the handle. May or may not mean slicing the end off the sabre, though.

    Nice work, fella, either way!

Cool pics ,that up arthurs seat?

The skate park isn't that bad Ned wise but is fantastically flood and I'm not sure when they switch the lights out.

I can see Arthur's Seat in the distance so I'm guessing its not there. ;-)
    Cool sheets of light though.

I assumed it was somewhere Figgatey, especially if there are wee drops to fall off on. Can't imagine why he didn't pop to the nearest section of the Innocent at Bingham.

    Posted 12 years ago #
  24. Aye, tis the Figgate.

    Hmmmm. Bingham. Night. Innocent. Yeah.

I did actually try a shot at the cobbled road under the rail bridge to Porty from Duddingston, but there was just a little too much ambient light playing against the lightsabre.

And I know that park like the back of my hand, which is why it was so embarrassing forgetting about that drop!

The skate park lights are programmed to switch off at 10.00pm. This was agreed with local commmunity reps and the city council. That is the main floods. That said, there is an ambient light on each of the four columns that switches on as the main floods switch off. These remain on until sun up. This is of course for the safety of the skaters, bmxers and scooter riders. In addition, the ambient lights were needed to ensure that the CCTV could monitor the park after lights out. The bar has just been raised:

(Sorry, still can't work out how to embed the actual video. I don't know if it's because I use Chrome on Linux: any tips gratefully received)

At first glance it looks like a negative image, but it's not. Sure it's in black and white, but look closely and you'll see that it's actually a chap in a glowing suit snowboarding in the dark.

    I think it's rather beautiful...

I think so too... Here's me hoarding milk cartons to string a reasonably consistent line of light together.
