Crikey! Hope you're OK?

Not again, Custard. You okay?
Posted 12 years ago # -
Eep. At least you're conscious and able to type. Anyone nearby able to pop to photograph it in case evidence required?

hi folks
Im alive, didnt mean to leave my message so short but i was in a fair bit f pain at the time.
dislocated some bone in my shoulder and ruptured the ligaments that hold it in place.
back at hospital on monday to see if surgery is required.
the bike has a busted tyre, both front lights, brake lever busted
dont know if theres anything else yet.
helmet is toast too. took a fair dunt to the head.
hate em or wear em I think i was lucky i was wearing one today. As to what happened.
i was heading down the hill and was aware of a black taxi behind me
I thought "dont tell me he is trying to squeeze by" as we approached the pedestrian crossing.
sure enough he did and as I was busy watching him I didnt see(dont even know if i would have seen it in time on an empty road) the hole
he had just passed me as i launched
all i know is he didnt stop. nor the next 2 taxis i tried to flag down from the side of the roadPosted 12 years ago # -
That sounds nasty, nice of the first taxi to squeeze you out.
Good luck on monday.
Apart from the clarence angle, do you intend to speak to councillor / MSP - I know it sounds a bit opportunistic, but you turning up in an MP weekly surgery covered in cuts and bruises might have more weight than an email about the dangers faced by cyclists?
Posted 12 years ago # -
i may do
Im not going to be at work for the near future!
just the other dayi was on foot and saw a woman in rage mode as a cyclist.who had taken the controlling line at a set of lights turning right.
of course the driver has no idea of cycling on ice and assumes the cyclist should be over to the sidePosted 12 years ago # -
@custard...townwards or Fort Kinnairdwards? Or indeed at the other end of the path i.e. on the Innocent xroad, towards Duddingston/Castlecraigs?

Hey custard, sorry to hear about your fall. I hope you get well soon. Plenty of rest, vitamin C producing fruits (Kiwi, blueberries, citrus, etc.) to aid healing, should help your recovery.
It may not be your priority, but I would think there is a case for damages to be paid by the council for the state of the road leading to your injury. After all motorists get their damaged suspensions paid for...
You may need to get photos of your bike, your injuries and ask someone to snap the pothole before it's filled in.
Posted 12 years ago # -
yeah I had thought the same
I'll need to try and sort photos of the potholePosted 12 years ago # -
Perhaps Peffermill pothole photography is something that forum denizens could arrange? Anyone live nearby with access to a digital camera? Date and time stamp on the image would be handy, methinks...

be great if someone could
wont be able to go in day light tomorrow but could manage on monday
no idea on the quality of photo i could manage!had a look at the bike
chip on the top tube. fair play to boardman. the paint is thick on the frames
i cant check the gears as i cant lift the bike. no obvious damage but chain is off.
on light maybe salvageable if i can rig a mount. it only survived as its alloy cased.
my new selle italia saddle is scraped on one side
brake lever maybe fixable.looks like a ball and socket affair and may pop in but needs two hands!
tyre may just be a puncture but will have wait till im fitter.damage doesnt look much but it would have been on my head.
i was very aware of my head striking the ground hard in the fall.Posted 12 years ago # -
Custard, I've just been out to Peffermill to have a look and to take some photos. The hole is quite serious for anyone in a car, let alone on a bike. I'll post one or two here once I've sorted them out.
Posted 12 years ago # -
many thanks
tbh at the time i had no idea what happened
it was only after one of the taxis(who ignored me!) hit it and i heard it thumping into it that i walked over for a look.Posted 12 years ago # -
That's your helmet totalled, you need a new one once it has a dent like that. As you say, lucky it wasn't your skull.
If you are considering a claim against the council, it is worth getting a quotation from a bike shop for the necessary repairs: your front wheel might be buckled for example. I would have thought the major expense though is for personal injury and the time you've had to take off work.

Custard, I hope you recover well and suitably quickly. You can see the size of the hole in these pics: it's probably 4 inches deep in the centre and over a foot in diameter. It's the bigger of the two, next to the VW Polo's back wheel.

pretty much in the death zone with a taxi on my offside
had the taxi been a wee bit back i coul have been under the wheels as i landed in the chevronsPosted 12 years ago # -
@ crowriver
yeah it was the first thing i said when i saw the helmet.
i hadnt noticed at the time and assumed was simply a broken visorputting the bike into a shop for a quote is a good idea.
i was actually building up a boardman mtb. so i may concentrate on that and leave the hybrid as is for a bike shop.
it soon adds up when you see thebroken bits add upthankfully i get full sick pay for 6 months but may lose my xmas bonus of £100 as its reliant on full attendance of december.
not always enforced thoughPosted 12 years ago # -
You may be able to get free legal advice if you are a member of a union, the CTC or through home insurance
Posted 12 years ago # -
@amir. good call.
be good to get something out of the union!Posted 12 years ago # -
Just catching up now. I wondered why this pothole was attracting Arellcat and Liz to go on recce missions....
That's a bad injury and sorry to hear - could have been a lot worse but should never have happened at all.
A pothole that deep on a downhill really needs to get fixed quickly .
Bicycle Legal (registered on this forum) is another possibility. He could certainly give advice. Potholes on Bicycle Legal
CTC though have been targeting potholes so they will be interested.
Thanks for updating forum on this hazard and hope recovery comes as soon as possible with no lasting damage.

Ruptured ligaments? Quite extraordinary things, the connective tissue. Apparently a cable of one inch diameter could lift around nine tonnes. But, when they get damaged it's rubbishy rubbish MacRubbish of the clan Bad.
I'd be looking for the biggest legal book you can throw at them. Fingers crossed for Monday, mon ami.

Some photos of the offending, Custard swallowing pothole(s). There were actually two, one smaller than the other. There was loads of chippings on the road, there was a wave of tarmac by the pavement, and the second larger pothole had a lip on the outer section so you went in and would be stopped getting out by a bank... hope this is clear from the photos. This is not the worst crater I have seen and could name a few others, but hit at any sort of speed you would come a cropper.

I cannot seem to publish photos to the site itself so here is the link...above!

Custard - just caught up on this. Hope you are starting to feel somewhat better? A bas strong of incidents - was this all at 3am? Glad you can get the (paid) time off work at least. Look after yourself.
Posted 12 years ago # -
it was around 0340
on side note
when i got to casualty (i went home in a taxi 1st to drop the bike off) it was pretty packed
from what i could see
everyone except me was in with a drink related injury
eg relatively minor cuts and bumps
I sat until 0745 before being seen(however once seen I was seen, xrayed, given pain meds, diagnosed, given a sling and follow up appointment in 45 minutes). perhaps its time for a sober queue in casualty!Posted 12 years ago # -
custard curdling craters
sorry to hear about this
all the pothole the council filled with temporary patches last spring have exploded following first heavy frosts. The ones filled with tar and stones where there is room to expand are still in place. Gorgie Road/A71 craterfest

custard, I drove this way earlier today, and have some observations -
(1) There is definitely enough room for an observant driver to either hold back, or not harass a cyclist.
(2) ....and a follow up to the above - at 0340 ??!! wtf was the taxi driver thinking about, its so quiet he only need lift off the throttle for a second, and all this was avoided.
(3) .....again, at 0340 !! - he did not stop, there is virtually no traffic, did he not see you fall? You could have been a fatality / so badly injured another car hit you - what an utter, utter scumbag.
Posted 12 years ago # -
exactly. I assumed he wouldn't try and pass
theres oodles of space after the lights and we were the only 2 on the road.
he 'caught up' with me. so would have had plety warning i was there. it was a manoeuvre he chose to make
I don't know about others but when i overtake anything in the car I have a look in the mirrors after I have passed them.
I run(well ran!) a cateye flashing light and superbright CREE light up front
cateye rear and a smart 2x 0.5w rear
those lights would have been flashing all over the shop as i went A over TPosted 12 years ago # -
Blimey, poor you. Glad you are more or less in one piece. Agree with everyone who has suggested complaining to everyone possible. Any CCTV in the area? Forcing a cyclist into a pothole should be investigated IMO.
