Was having a google on the Surly Pacer and most are built in a very old fashioned style, then I saw this on the weight weenies forum:

An amazing looking bike imo, and proof that from a "standard" frame you can build pretty much whatever you want :-) (and at 8 1/2 kilos it hardly counts as heavy in my book :-o:-D )

are those 650c wheels? something doesn't quite look right in the proportions, or perhaps it's just the very tall head tube?

Looks lovely, but think the Zipps are overkill!

700's afaik, I think it's just the tall headtube, skinny tubes and deep wheels. Got to say, straight top tubes and skinny steel looks the business after too much fat alloy and plastic ;-)

How can bling wheels be overkill? They'll make that thing feel faaaast lol:-)))

  4. Had been seriously considering a Surly Pacer for the build I have planned for Mel - looks a great frame. Had to put it off at the time with job uncertainty, but now I'm free and clear I've been presented with a different option from the States (by Mr Kaputnik there) that takes wider tyres, and is specifically designed for hub gearedness. And is more of a colour that I know Mel will like.

But yeah, with the right will you can build almost anything into almost anything!

@smudge I was more thinking the cost mismatch - each of those wheels probably costs twice of what the frame costs!

Having searched online this morning, a *lot* of people clearly love theirs, some 14st++ people complain about flex in the bottom bracket and have gone back to carbon wonderbikes(!)
Having checked the secret piggybank... I'm thinking a nice silver one would take my black shimano 105 gear, SKS 'guards and pro-lite wheels from the Giant, possibly even the ITM CF fork I have lying in the garage, Hmmmm

    temptation! :-/

@Kaputnik, true, true, but they do look good don't they? Anyway, if you like the bike and can afford the wheelset/have them lying around then why not :-)

I can't find the picture just now (but Smudge may have sent it to you in the past through Flickr) but on Flickr there's a picture of a mad Long Haul Trucker with solid carbon 4-bladed wheels.

(grins), yes I remember you sending me it before, but in fairness that was just some shop staff having a laugh. I thing the wheelset on my LHT is as expensive as I'd be prepared to go on a touring bike!

Fortunately it seems that strong wheels aren't too expensive! I think the A319s I have are about £70 each for rims and I had them built onto existing hubs (as the Alex ones it came with were guff)

Ahhh yes, but then the X717 Mavics I have were only 40ish each for the rims, but add a pair of hope hubs, a steel freewheel and two wheelbuilds and they are not so cheap... otoh they are straight as a die, strong as a strong thing, moderate weight and shrug off even Edinburgh potholes, so I've got what I paid for :-)
