Schoolboy breaks arm in Edinburgh hit-and-run

A 12-year-old schoolboy had his arm broken when he was struck by a car in a hit-and-run in Edinburgh.

The boy was hit as he crossed Marchmont Road, near the junction with Thirlestane Road, between 08:35 and 08:45 on Wednesday.

After initially slowing down, the car then drove away from the scene.

The boy immediately got to his feet, but later discovered he had broken his left arm. Lothian and Borders Police appealed for witnesses.

The car was described as being small and green.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "The young boy suffered a painful injury to his arm and anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police immediately.

"We would similarly urge the driver of the car to get in touch as soon as possible.

"There is a chance they may not have realised the severity of the collision and it is vitally important they make contact with us to explain the circumstances surrounding this incident."

What kind of sick and twisted individual knocks a child down and then drives off? I mean cyclists I can understand - we're "fair game" apparently. But a child?

Is Marchmont Road on or off the 20mph zone?

  2. For crying out loud. If he did indeed 'slow down' then the driver clearly knew he'd hit something. Requires a book, a large one, to be thrown.

I've always imagined there's a giant, dusty, leather-bound book somewhere called "THE LAW". It possibly runs to tens of thousands of pages and is constantly having bits snipped out, glued in and bits tippexed and redacted.

I think that should do for throwing purposes?

I imagine the difference in treatment between a driver who hits a dear precious child as opposed to 'vermin cyclists' may be instructive.

/me wonders about staking out Marchmont road tomorrow and photographing all the small green cars that drive through ;-)

    Marchmont Road = 30mph route.
Wonder how far they'll trawl for any CCTV which might have caught the number plate as it passed. Failure to stop at the scene of an accident at the very least, seeing as there's no official offence called 'running away after being a scumbag'.

Hope they charge the kid with causing the driver to momentarily slow down and be 3 seconds later arriving at their destination.

  7. Actually, was reading something linked to on Twitter last night from the States. Police driver (not on an emergency call) ran over and killed two people. The relatives of a girl who was hit were there almost immediately (she was run over on the street where she lived) and were, rather naturally, a bit upset.

A couple of police cars arrived and... wrestled a number of relatives to the ground, cuffed, them, arrested them, took them down the station. What makes it worse is that they are going to court (can't remember the actual offence) and face time in prison.

The cop who ran the people over? No charge. Internal investigation. Suspende don full pay, expected to return to duty soon.

Unless the driver is an off duty Police officer, in which case hitting and running is fine.

Well the fact that they are going after them at all is a big clue..

Indeed. You'd have to be killed by a driver to get that much attention as a cyclist, and even then, I'm not so sure...

I'd put money on that driver avoiding that route for quite some time... I'll be keeping my eyes out for any small green cars with dents!

Anth, you got in before me with a similar case. The case I was referring to was here in Edinburgh, hit and run by a Police Officer, the man was killed but there is no charge. I've added the link to my post.

  12. I'd forgotten about that story.

This is the one from the States

@anth, are those names in the article for real? Sheriff Youngblood, and Deputy Swearengin?

Interesting comment to the article: "Might as well toss the 1st, 4th and 5th amendments right down the crapper." Wonder if JP and/or TwoWheels can help illuminate?

Funny how the story is "schoolboy breaks arm". Like it was his fault or something. NO, the DRIVER in the CAR broke his arm for him. GOT THAT BEEB?
