Strange. There were plenty a few months back for a week of enforcing cycling "cheats".

I'll let someone else reply to this one, not feeling v humorous today :-/

They must have started paying attention to the Daily Wail-esque rantings of the EEN commenters and have gone off to catch 'real' criminals. Which, in the tiny minds of those commenters, would include red light jumping and pavement cycling cyclists obviously.

"Why not forget about 'policing' bus lanes and actually try and catch criminals. FFS, using the police to catch people trying to get passed james [sic - should be 'jams', but it's quite a funny typo] caused by....bus lanes. Only in Edinburgh"
Of course. Jams caused by bus lanes. Not cars. No no no.

"Some campaigners have called for cameras similar to those found in other UK cities to be installed, which would automatically catch drivers, but critics feel there are already too many restrictions on the Capital’s roads."
well the restrictions already in place.
if you are breaking that restriction then you risk the fine.
Is the answer to these type of issues that part of the fine goes inot the Police funding?
like football policing, the costs need to be met
yes it may mean a more zealous approach from Police but I would prefer officers out and about enforcing it over cameras TBHPosted 13 years ago # -
I don't understand why catching drivers who abuse bus lanes should be so contraversial since it must annoy drivers too.
I'd want to see drivers who straddle the lane, not driving in it themselves but preventing the bus from using it fined too. This is a lot more common.

It would hardly be difficult and manpower intensive for a couple of officers to stand at the side of the road taking details and pictures.
They could make hundreds if not thousands of tickets a day on the stretch between Stenhouse and Broomhouse westbound in the morning and on South Gyle Broadway eastbound in the evening alone.

'Not enough police' to enforce speed limits either. Somehow though there are 'enough police' to patrol football matches, royal weddings, etc.
Priorities a bit mixed up perhaps?

Strathclyde polis will have to station special units at Prestwick during the London Olympics because any suspect planes carrying bearded men will be diverted there. No extra cash is forthcoming to pay for this.

G MacKenzie says they have ~10 cameras setup to catch drivers in Green Lanes but are waiting for the Gov't to allow them the power to enforce the law as its a central Gov't thing at the mo, and I mean Scottish Parliament not Westminster Gov't.
Apparently we have way too much responsibility in the hands of central Gov't instead of local Gov't according to Mr MacKenzie, though he would say that, he's in local Gov't isn't he. Ths means everything which may be required for such schemes as Green Lane cameras have t be approved in Holyrood which takes too much time, to happen in any reasonable amount of time.

DaveC - the regulations required to allow the Council to enforce bus lane offences using CCTV cameras were laid before the Scottish Parliament on 19 December - they should come into force some time early(ish) next year.

Morningsider, yep - and IMO its clearly odds on that it will come into force, as they have already installed many of the cameras e.g. in the section between meadowbank stadium and meadowbank house and in other high profile spots - they dont look like normal cameras, smaller, are greyish in colour - they appear to have 3 lenses, almost but not quite like the SPECS (average speed)cameras you see on motorways, presumably number plate recognition.
Crowriver, interesting question re: policing football and royal weddings, as football police costs are borne by the clubs themselves (rightly, in my opinion), whereas weddings/g20s etc seems to be a constant bunfight between central and local govt about who pays what.

Good, the Council are well prepared for this then. I look forward to the bus lanes being much easier to use when cycling!
