It looked set to go down in history as a runaway internet success.

That was until Lost Edinburgh – a Facebook page dedicated to photos of the city in bygone days – itself became a thing of the past because of copyright issues.

But now nostalgic Edinburgh residents are in for a treat, with the makers of the hit page announcing its return.

While it was cool, the article conveniently overlooks how they upset a lot of photographers, copyright owners and individuals by harvesting their photos and passing them off without attribution. There's a good reason it was suddenly pulled. As someone who is frequently on the receiving end of such individuals (however well intentioned), it can be upsetting and frustrating and for some people it feels like an assault on their livelihood.

Whinge over, I guess they've learned a lesson and I wish them well with their new approach to it - as it is something very interesting indeed!

Oh and in case you've never visited (and why not!?), Peter Stubbs' Edinphoto is hands down the best photographic record online of Edinburgh.

An amazing mix of vintage photos, maps, scans, adverts through to more contemporary captures from the 50s to the early 90s covering a bewildering array of all aspects of Edinburgh life.

Website looks a little bit homespun (well, it is) but its easy to navigate and the author has gone to a lot of trouble to provide good descriptions to put the photos in context.
