Well done folks. You got some reasonable eather for the ride, quite rare...

@Laidback: Will I do another? These things are highly competitive and not sure how hard I want to ride.

    But.....it's not a race! ;-)

I'm taking a certain perverse pride in being the 'fastest' of the tail end charlies on my first two audaxes. Maybe if I didn't pack my saddlebag with quite so much stuff I might go a tad faster. Maybe.

I have to admit I found that pretty difficult (might consider smaller than 42t chainring for the "granny"?)

At least we had the wind on our side (if it had to blow at all) with largely crosswinds or tailwind for most of the ride.

    Quite like http://www.flickr.com/photos/66067108@N08/7962805512/in/photostream/

That was a great ride. The strengthening (tail) wind in the afternoon was nice. Sorry to see you head back at the Leithen Hopes Amir.

But the 39T would have allowed you to go too quickly uphill;-) (on 20" front drive wheel). I had to build in some 'resistance' otherwise I'd have been left behind... The payback was the larger 55T front ring onto the 9T Capreo.

I had a 26T on my bike - albeit it was onto 26" wheel. I'll see about getting a 39T for the Raptobike and then it should be bit easier.

If I had been indisposed for any reason besides my cousin's beautiful wedding, I'd be a twitchy bag of green eyed monstrous.

That said, I think I'd be in poor shape after two hundred clicks on an undersized bike. Probably better than after the same on an undergeared bike, mind.

    Well done, those chaps!

@LaidBack Good to see you again yesterday. Did you benefit from Dave's PBP experience? Jackson Priest(?) kept spirits up with tales of marketing Marshall's Pasta to cyclists; descriptions of his wife's aunt who lived in Westruther (at one point I thought we were going to call in) and threats to get a KOM on the Fa'side Castle climb.

Were there some good audax banter at the end? I missed that - eg. the stories of where people have slept on long rides - a perverse advert for audax.

Not as much as last year. Some discussion of triple A routes, whatever they are. The best story was of a rider who cut his head in a fall. A passer-by helped staunch the bleeding by sticking a disposable nappy on his head. It seemed funny at the time.

I just joined! Thought I might as well try for one of the Brevet awards over the next year or two. After all, if I'm going to ride events...

Tom, the season ends at the end of September, but it was pointed out to me the annual membership starts in December. So if you join now you'd think you will only get a couple of months membership? but just the opposite is true! Join now and you'll get a year and ~3 month free. I joined a month ago :-).

As I said on the ride to NB, you get two of those nice AUK Blue stickers for your mudguard.... oh you don't have any mudguards?? Can I have them please?? :D

As I discovered this morning, if you join now you get the remaining 2012 membership for free, and your membership runs until December 2013.

Dunno, the Welcome Pack will be in the post, I guess. I do like a good mudguard sticker, though: thanks for the tip. Now if I don't receive one I shall be disappointed...

Nah, I'm another Dave (only joking).

I'm a sucker for badges and stickers. Thanks for the advice. I will join today. I might try the Saltire permanent before the clocks change.

Ha, that will null the Erit Lass! Undoing all that hard riding! ;)

I was told the Saltire was supposed to be harder as the climbs were steeper in that direction? but I'd also like to try it in reverse. Its a perm right? You just have to pay Audax the day before and get till receipts. The organiser will have spare cards. Not sure who that is. Why don't you join the Audax Ecosse Facebook Group? You could find out there.

Having been lurking on here for a few months I thought I'd finally post something in the Audax thread.

Firstly, I'm glad you all seemed to enjoy Sunday.

I organise the Saltire as well as the Erit Lass. The Saltire is a "proper Perm" which was what we all rode before these new fangled DIY's and GPS arrived. When you enter a Perm you'll get a brevet card, routesheet and quite often other info from the organiser. It's a good idea to enter a few weeks before you intend to ride as you'll need to use snail mail because you can't use Paypal for Perms and the organiser may be on holiday.

For a full list of Perms go here:
    http://www.aukweb.net/perms/

@Tom - if you want to enter the Saltire it's probably easier and quicker for you to pop round rather than posting letters to each other when we live half a mile apart.

I personally find the Saltire the harder of the two as you do the tough bit first but then still have 150km to cycle.

PS I was the bloke who ended up with the disposable nappy on his head

    Welcome Cyclops.

Yet another well informed/useful person joins CCE!

It's been fascinating to watch various people on here trying audax - some might not have without CCE encouragement.

    Most seem to enjoy it.

    Most strange.

And more proof that bikes (and the people who ride them) are infinitely flexible!

@Tom ha ha, I was indeed entertaining that thought. I was feeling pretty rubbish at that point, and she did make some lovely scones last time I was there. If she didn't live right at the top of a hill...

Anyway, thanks for keeping my spirits up, was a grand day out (mostly!).

@davec nice to sort of meet you - we did say hello in the caff I'm sure, should have introduced ourselves.

@Cyclops I do believe I emailed you yesterday, but thanks again for organising it all, providing soup etc. Going to Lauder this sunday so planning to do a fair bit of the route again...

Hi Martin. Nice to see you on here too! Thanks for organising these two rides, I loved Sunday... Well I really liked it... now I've finished and am sat comfortably on my sofe with a beer and good tv on the box. I fancy the Saltire now but will have to wait for next year as I don't fancy doing it in the cold winter and the next few weeks are busy until the Three Glens. An Audax for me is as much about a social ride as the ride in its self. Chatting to new riders is great.

I just figure any "sport" which involves convivial company and near compulsory cake stops is my kind of sport ;-)
Besides, as on here, it doesn't matter what you ride, just as long as you ride B-)

Not sure if this is should be in this thread, but...

This may be short notice, but I'm planning to head westwards out of the NIMBY capital of Scotland on Saturday, and ride the route of the 'Robert Millar Sportive' which was on in May this year.

It's 95 miles, and takes in the Tak Me Doon, the Crow Road, Loch Katrine and, er, much much more.

Will probably stop somewhere for a spot of lunch, and probably ride an average of 15mph-ish.

Am going to get a train from Waverley to the start of the route (Lenzie apparently) early-ish on saturday morning.

If anyone wants to join me, you are most welcome.

    Route is here: http://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_1614464.html

That looks like a great JP. I've done some bits during the Trossachs Ton. However this weekend I'll probably do something a little less ambitious in order to recover my energy and keep Mrs amir happy.

I'm afraid I can't go either as I will be with the girls trying to find a cheap Japanese noodle bar in Edinburgh (there must be one - a cheap one I mean).

I hope it goes well. Looks like a great route though I only know the bit round the lochs and the Crow Road from the other direction.

BTW what's the NIMBY capital of Scotland?

@Amir have you formulated any concrete plans for the weekend yet? I've been away eating too much cake in Germany for the last week so need something to ease / kick me back into rides!

My Next Audax is the Three Glens on the 30th Sept from Linlithgow. Then I'll be on the Guy Fawkes (Buddest Retreat Audax. Amir and I were speaking to Theo this morning and trying to convince him to go for the Three Glens.

Am I the slow one to help you out?! I usually aim to shelter behind you on these breezy days.

I have no plans yet - my body seems to struggling to recover its olympian peak condition after last weekend's cold. My wife has expressed interest in a cycle ride but the forecast is quite breezy. Ideally I will hit >70 miles spread over 2 days.

Longer term, the next audax I am planning to do is the Guy Fawkes one. Unfortunatly I can't do the 3 Glens - I'll be trying to catch the last of the european summer in Tuscany.
