I think* Dougie Vipond's experiences in The Snow Roads are being covered next Tuesday on the Adventure Show (7pm BBC2).

(*pretty sure that's what they said at the end of last night's show but wasn't listening hard enough)

I really want to see that Adventure Show - for some reason I am keen to do the Snow Roads next year (just have to persuade Mr fimm, I think I am getting there).

No, its not next Tuesday on our EPG. The programme is shown every month or so.

Fimm, do you have to ask your husband for permission?!?!?!

@DaveC, only fair if you need to check with 'the management' and I require agreement with 'the missus'?

    Told you I wasn't listening.

He's not actually my husband, just my boyfriend. As crowriver says, we negotiate what we want to do over the year as there is only so much time and money available!

Hmmm, thr forecast I saw this morning (for Sunday) suggested North easterlies and unpredictable precipitation :-/

So if you see a knackered bald bloke on a red Giant OCR wheelsucking you, be gentle, and I'll get you a brew sometime by way of apology! ;-)

Eh? Last forecast I saw was for 20mph sou'westerlies and heavy/light rain. Would not be much fun on the way back.

I did the Dunning part of the route a wee while back on a CTC run, and we had four seasons in one day. It's Scotland, we need to be prepared for the unexpected!

That was on the beeb early doors this morning, if you've got some chicken bones and a random number generator I can do a fresh forecast though ;-)

    @Smudge I think they're doing that anyway...

I think I know what I'm going to wear and bring. Just need to sort it all out and decide whether to go for the very early train or just the slightly early train... oh and print out the route cards!

The start is not until 09.30 fimm, though booking a place for your bike might be useful to avoid dissapointment. I know a couple of riders are riding out to the start and then riding home afterwards.

I thought it was not possible to book one's bike on those trains? Not that I've tried... I will investigate. I don't fancy riding out to the start on top of a 100 miler - this is going to be the furthest I've cycled this year anyway.

Scotrail has a cutoff point (distance, route dependent) beyond which it is possible to book a seat and therefore reserve a cycle space. Not sure exactly what it is, however

Well I've got new arm and leg warmers so I will hopefully be cosy, and in a sudden display of weakness I've got a compact chainset to fit tomorrow in place of the standard double so the hills shouldn't hurt quite as much, so fingers crossed for an enjoyable day out! :-)

As I understand it (after a bit of searching around on the Scotrail site) there are routes (longer distance ones) where you must have a reservation, and routes where you don't need one. What is not clear is whether it is possible to make reservation on a route where it is not compulsory. I'll ask on my way through Haymarket this evening.

To be honest, you would hope that at 8:30 on a Sunday morning it would be possible to take more than the minimum number of bikes on a train, but one just fears the jobsworth...

If you're very concerned you could drop your bike at my place on Saturday (just outside Falkirk) but I would think you'll be fine on the Sunday tbh

@Smudge that's very kind of you, but I think you are right that I will be OK. I didn't speak to anyone at Haymarket (it was busy) but I did check the timetable and those trains don't stop between Haymarket and Linlithgow, so so long as I can get the bike on to the train, once the train starts moving I'm getting off at the next stop anyway.
Just how jobsworthy would you have to be to stop a cyclist standing with their bike for one stop on a quiet train? I can't imagine that the trains will be busy at 8:30 on a Sunday...

Note that this guarantees that my next post will be "couldn't get to Linlithgow..."

Smudge, I resist any tinkering with a bike just before a big cycle, but I am most certainly not mechanically skilled. Hope it goes well, wind ment to be slightly less tomorrow than today, blowy out there now.

@Gembo, yup, I know what you mean, I try to avoid it myself generally, just poor planning/lack of free time really! hopefully Smudge minor will have a happy day and allow me time to get in about it relatively early :)

@Fimm, no worries, if you change plans just drop me a pm.

All exciting now! Though I've never done more than 85 miles before, so slightly frightening.

Forecast currently dry mostly, but a fairly stiff westerly.

I'm also counting on getting the bike to Linlithgow on the train from Edinburgh. Scotrail are usually pretty decent about bikes, so not too worried. Fairly sure you can't book on the Edinburgh to Glasgow route.

Anyway, good luck to all tomorrow. Hopefully meet some of you. I'll be on my recently revived, and almost fashionably retro now, black, white, pink and orange Raleigh Volant.

I'll be wearing red n white long slieve top with Hardie-bikes logos on. 3/4 shorts, white helmet and on a green Dawes. Spot me and introduce yourselves won't you.

Oh and ~80 riders registering on the morning will take a while. Get there early.
