4.25AA = at least 4250m of climbing. Which is quite hilly (a 'normal' ride which doesn't target hilliness is usually about 1000m/100km)

I'm trying to think of it as 4.25km of descent instead...

Worth knowing if only to avoid anything with that kind of rating. Cheers.

Why do they quote all of the distances / speeds in European measurements? Is it just to make them seem longer ;)

It's Miles in this country be jesus!!

    Because they're European awards? ;-)

About time we moved to metric road signs.

Mainly because it would upset the Metric Martyrs.

And as for listing bike weights in lbs...

It's good for mental flexibility to have different systems of measurement. I measure my weight in kg and height in ft/ins (probably because the latter doesn't change much).

@DaveC, I'll pass on it this time around. Need to complete a 100K Audax within the time limit/average speed limit first!

Put my bike in for an overhaul at Eastside, I have a feeling that it was not helping at times. Apart from the jammed chain, I had rear brake rubbing a bit which made for more effort: might be the wheel out of true or poorly adjusted cantis (which would be my fault). I'm getting all the bearings serviced too. Hopefully the machine will ride a bit more sweetly, as it used to until the last 6 weeks or so when it's had a string of minor issues.

I might go for some of the shorter Audaxes in the summer. Pity the Kingdom of Fife run is not active at the moment, would be a good 'un!

@DaveC, this 100K Audax from the same start on the same day seems more like my cup of tea, literally! 12kph minimum average speed apparently (unless that's a typo), which even I can manage.

    Tempted...

Hmm. Maybe my bike was more a problem than I thought! Just got it back from Eastside, apparently a couple of bearings in the rear hub were split in two like dried peas! With that sorted, fresh grease in all main bearings, wheels trued and brakes adjusted the bike rides a lot more smoothly!

Tempted here too, crowriver. That's my old stomping ground and I'll most likely be up in Forfar that day since it's near my sister's birthday and she usually goes home at the weekends around them. I went for a pootle in the Kirrie-Cortachy region at Christmas time:

Today I broke a couple of records: a humble(but for me record breaking)32 miles single trip, and a new top speed of 35mph. I'd actually budgeted, for want of a better word for a 40 miler, but I'd underestimated how much distance I had 'wasted' on the outward journey, so when I decided to head home after seeing 20 miles come round on the computer, I was actually being a sillyum.

Just a meander across to Fife, but without a map I am a hopelessly poor navigator, so I managed to lose NCN1 about four times. In my defence, I had the entire afternoon, no definite destination, no-one else to inconvenience, and a bit of wanderlust, so getting creatively lost wasn't in my mind a waste. I could have retraced my steps every time I realised I'd dropped NCN1 again, but instead went 'Nah, this looks pretty down here.' Besides, it's not like I could overshoot the bridge, not without getting very wet, anyway.

I should really have taken the singlespeed cyclocross, but went for the fixed racer since it was such a calm day. Also it meant I would have a computer.

Hats off to DaveC for doing that several times a week all through winter with the toad work awaiting him.

@Uberuce, might see you in Kirriemuir, then. I've been having a think about how to get my bike (and myself) there. Sure, it's only 20-odd miles from Dundee or Arbroath, but have you seen the hills? Not sure I want to climb them the day before an audax!

Looking at the bus as an option, camping or B&B locally the night beforehand. I will need to take the wheels/pedals/bars off and bag the bike probably. So, potentially on the lookout for a bike bag, in order that my bike becomes luggage. Have a couple for folders, but too small.

From YACF (other fora are available):

"Last call for entries - event closes Wednesday.

We are at a whopping 68 entries so far, which is most excellent.

Im hoping to arrange an event photographer to capture your "enjoyment". "

I think we have a wee CCE contingent - we will have to get some team jerseys!

Crowriver. I think we're staying there the night before. If its the Potter for Tea then I think the organisor has a local hall booked for ppl to stay in? 20 miles the day before, if taken at a gentle pace won't do you any harm will it?

Adrian which Audax are you taking about here? Potter for tea closing date is 26th May.

@DaveC, aye the Potter for Tea: I'll need to check the arrangements I suppose. If it's bedding down in a hall that's fine by me. It's not so much the mileage the day before, which is very modest, it's more the 750ft of climb over 5 miles out of Dundee (not as testing as Redstane Rigg, but some step bits all the same). Original plan was just to cycle up from Dundee or Arbroath, may still do that and, as you say take it gently.

@Uberuce, you planning on single speed for Kirriemuir? Or will you add some gears? ;-)

Whoops, entered the Potter for Tea. Worry about how I'm going to get to Kirriemuir nearer the time. Will sleep in the hall night before.

I do have a vague plan to hub-gear the Genesis, so it depends on how quick I am doing that. I think even my high ambient levels of recklessness draw the line at taking the high fixie or the old roadster. Mostly because of the saddle on the latter; it's like an armchair, but as I found out when I failed at keys one morning recently and had to do my 3-mile commute three times in a row, it gets a bit chafey after 8 miles or so.

I rode Broughty Ferry to Forfar without much fuss on the Genesis, shod in Marathon Winters and in fixed gear, although you're right that the bit coming out of Dundee was the least pootly.

I think some training runs are in order for we two, we happy two, although plainly any other CCEers ought to come along if they're interested in a series of gradually increasingly lengthy pootles.

Aye, training. Trouble is fitting it around work, kids, chores, sleep...

Grand weather just now though. May take the toddler with me for a spin.

May have some more time come the Easter break. CTC Saturday rides can be up to 100K, sometimes more, and the Spokes rides will be getting longer as the days do.

A CCE mini-audax training run sounds good mind. Maybe a run to North Berwick and back?

That sounds pretty good, yarp. As it happens I've got a few weeks of half days due over the coming months; working two jobs with different holiday allowances does that. I doubt that'll make any difference to organising us(I guess you're Mon-Fri 9-5 or threabouts) but does mean I can get my legs up to your length before Easter - I'm still not even in the 40 mile club yet.

If you're mainly riding fixed/single speed, 40 miles is fairly challenging stuff. I find group rides led by someone else can help you concentrate on your cycling without having to worry about navigation. Also makes the miles pass more easily, motivates you to press on having other riders to keep up with/watch out for.

There are a couple of organised rides coming up which may suit you for getting the miles in. Both on Sundays (I can't make either due to other commitments). CTC 40 mile ride, this Sunday 25th, leaving from Commie Pool, 10am. Quite a gentle pace. Also Spokes ride, Sunday 1st April, from Usher Hall 10am. 10-12mph average speed so slightly pacier. Usually 40 miles or so, sometimes longer. I particularly enjoy the lunch stops on Spokes rides, often a pub or restaurant meal (phone organiser beforehand to let him know you are coming so he can reserve a table for the correct numbers, or you might be on your sandwich packed lunch instead).

Remember clocks go forward on Sunday so 10am actually 9am GMT...

Luckily, I don't know how hard I'm making things for myself since the only geared bike I have is hefty and lossy, so the single speed seems a doodle.

I think we're chasing some hills on the 1st(Can't remember if postponed that so the previous days CCE Nippy Sweetie runners can join in), and I'll be up in Forfar with the folks on the 25th, so it'll be todly rides for now.

May be worth looking at SRAM hub gears as well as SA. I'm very happy with the SRAM Spectro T3 (3-speed) on my 'Bucking Bronco' folder. Coaster brakes are optional...

Weather we're having just now is wonderfull, however the Beeb is hinting at colder weather for Fri/Sat :

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-17506257 << Look at James Cook's inset peice.

Also Radio Scotland (just missed it) John Beatie program has some more info on this but I suspect we'll have to listen to the whole peice to hear the weather news.
