Mudguards are still a good idea though. This is Scotland. Also quite apart from your own case of "trench backside" if the road is wet or muddy, consider the poor rider behind you...

Thank you for all the helpful comments. I appreciate that mudguards are a good idea, but I don't have them.

I'm down for the Erit Lass in September. Lovely ride - a bit lumpy on the homewood stretch...

Wotcha Dave, not seen you in a while. Might see you on the Erit Lass, I'll see how much cycling I can get away with.

riffian, amir, I've got my name down for the Erit Lass as well. "A bit lumpy" is putting it mildly.

There are a few nice Audax rides coming up, local to us. Who fancies joining me? I'm down for :

    Grantown Gallop 100km
    Moulin Moors (awaiting permission) 150km
Erit Lass (either this or Moulin Moors) 200km
    Three Glens Explorer 160km
    Then one of these,
Borders New Season Brevit or Guy Faukes Buddhist Retreat - both 200km

    Who's in?

I have always been tempted by Etal-u-Can but never got around to it. This year it is in September the week after the Erit Lass so I won't be doing it.

Hmm, does look nasty for my camping in Newtonmore this weekend. Winter sleeping bags me thinks.

The Guy Fawkes Buddhist Retreat looks interesting. Not too far to the start and quiet roads. I'd need to get some serious lights though.

The Guy Fawkes Buddhist Retreat does look good............ could be up for that one.

Ooh Guy Fawkes does look good, and a perfect test for the dynamo lights, they've never done an Audax yet.

If anyone happened to have space for +1, I'd be happy to cough up for petrol money *hint hint*

@DaveC, aye I stayed a bit too long at the final cake shop! Enjoyable ride despite the poor weather in the first half.

A mate comented on your red cape ;-)

It was certainly unusual. Kept me dry though!

When you guys use 'good', do you mean 'challenging with lots of lumpy bits'?

Getting to Galashiels is the issue for me: about as far from a railway station as it is possible to get on this island. I like to travel independently to stuff like this, hate imposing on others (not a criticism of those that get lifts, just my personal preference).

Anyone got a route profile for the Guy Fawkes thing. If it's not too lumpy, I might be ready for a long run by then and there's room for four bikes on the roof.

@Crowriver, sorry I didnakt manage to say hello, Dave did point you out before the start but somehow things seemed to get a bit hectic and then we were off! That last cake stop was marvellous! I could have stayed there longer myself! :-)

@Smudge, no worries, DaveC mentioned you were in the diner at the start, but I was selfishly preoccupied with my pot of tea. So it's me who should apologise for not saying hello.

The cherry cake in 'The Potting Shed' was delicious.

yeah that's got a few bites to it! At least climbing up hills at night you can't see the top...

Possible alternative is the Borders New Season Brevet on 20 October. Another 200k from Galashiels. Destination Gretna. Can't find a map. Unlikely to be much less hilly than the Buddhist Retreat, but a bit more sunlight en route...

I've a 200k barrier needing a good hard kick in the yarbles, so I'll have a pop at the Guy Fawkes.

Guy Fawkes follows the same route between Langholm and Innerleithen that druidh and I did late last year on a Carlisle to Edinburgh ride. The hills weren't too bad - nothing too steep at least, just long reasonable gradients. Good at night too, except for hitting the odd rough patch on the equally long descents.
