    Hi,

I'm looking into Turbo Trainers. Think I'll opt for 2nd hand, anyone on here got one they don't use and would like to sell please?

I'm a novice at this so any advice on TT will be welcomed. I suppose the basic ones don't come with a computer? I could live with this as I have a computer on the bike I'll be using, but if you have one with a tacograph I'd still consider it.

    Cheers,

    Dave C

Are you sure Dave. They are horrible!

You put your bike on a turbo trainer with the rear wheel spinning and the front wheel fixed. You may already have a computer on your bike but for the front wheel. Anyway speed and distance don't really mean the same as on the road. You tend to do fixed training patterns (e.g. intervals) and just survival for a longer time is an achievement. 30mins is my record where as my record on the road is nearer 8 hrs.

They're certainly hard work in my limited experience! I'm using a basic one a tacx sirius, I have a computer to measure heart rate (important) and cadence (handy bt not vital). You also (imho) need a nice big oscillating fan and a towel to catch the sweat. I've found the "sufferfest" videos quite good for structuring my training and staving off the boredom a little, but they are well named :-o best advice would be try before you buy if you can I think.

Dave, you can try mine if you like on Sunday as I live in Dalkeith. The only thing is you'll be suffering already after the ToM and I am still not sure what I am doing that day (cold forecast indicates later start best?)

I know a couple of local cyclists who have one I can borrow, so may take your advice.

I don't think I'm going on the ToM now amir, as my wife will have to drive me over and then collect me at the end, and she's got an appointment in the morning. Thinking I'll do a local tonne in Fife from home.

I have never understood why people would wanna cycle indoors! Cross training maybe, you only get so much snow, but running and cycling?

(ok, I kinda do know the the reason but really, rule 5 people!)

Ruggtomcat - I don't really want to do it; I just know that if I don't I'm going to regret it in the Summer.

Amir - I might ride the ToM but I'll need to check diaries first.

couple of reasons I can give
having kids/commitments that mean you need to be home
recuperation from injury- on this i'm considering one myself
I couldn't ride a bike with balance/steering. however with a turbo I could at least keep some leg muscles up.
there was one for £20 the other day on gumtree but I didnt feel fit enough to collect

    @DaveC
I have one sitting in the garage that I have no intention of ever using because the garage is freezing cold and I hate the turbo trainer. It's one of these but the resistance cable is missing. If you're happy to fix that, you can have it.

@custard yeah those were the kinda things I was thinking of. Still freaks me out to ride past the gym and see people on the bikes and running machines. For me the beauty of biking and running is not needing special equipment, or a gym membership. Surly running/riding inside is way more booring than actually traveling somewhere?

Another couple reasons: may like cycling as an activity but scared of mixing it up with traffic, may be on a strict a scientific training regime that requires more control than the real world allows.

I'm yet to try, but I reckon riding a Surly inside almost any building could be a lot of fun. Smart option would be a Steamroller in fixed for the control, but I'd say go FULL AWESOME and play supermarket sweep in a Big Dummy. If I was on my Mum's carpets, I know she'd kill me unless I was on a Pugsley with a brand new pair of their wonderfully soft fat tyres.

@custard I've one which you'd be welcome to borrow (and can be delivered) until you're allowed to use your arm again. The tension-adjustment bit is broken but using a high enough gear gets round that.

@ Winpig. thanks for the offer. I'll keep it in mind when this blimming arm sorts itself :)
