How do i go about it. A customer of ours trying out a bike smacked into a pothole in the meadows killing both wheels and taking out the frame too. I have pictures of the hole and its now coned off awaiting repair But I am out of pocket by 1 cannondale road bike
Who do I contact at the council or do I claim from scottish water as I believe the pothole was caused by their burst pipe?

Wow. That must have been a horrible crash. Hope he/she is ok! Where is the pot-hole?!
I've found a random website...

it is on the left as you head east through melville drive just before the foot of marchmont rd. Just after it happened I went along and got some pictures. About 2 feet long 14 inch wide and a good 5 inches deep. Water was constantly filling up the hole so as a cycl;ist it was impossible to see. It just looked like part of a puddle . Rider was a little shaken but OK thankfully

Scottish Water spent most of last week trying to fix it. They turned up early in week with that silly plastic fencing that just falls over as soon as it is exposed to moving air. Fortunately it fell into the big hole and kept people out of it.
The temporary traffic lights in operation later in the week was part of their remedial works. Temporary lights etc. all gone by weekend.
If it's happened since then, then their attempts to fix it have failed.

Wow. That's some crash. Last time I took out a frame in a crash was going into the back of a parked car at about 25mph. I've punctured in potholes but not taken out a wheel in one. To ruin two wheels and the frame in a pothole and walk away is a bit of an achievement. Surely Cannondale, with their legendary lifetime guarantee, will take care of the frame?

@ Aligrieve, I would suggest putting the claim to both the council and Scottish Water. For the council, I believe you should write to the Road Services Manager, City of, Edinburgh Council, Level 7, Chesser House, 500 Gorgie Road, Edinburgh, EH11 3YJ. They will then refer the claim to their claims handlers Gallagher Bassett to deal. You have photos of the pothole which is good. It is not uncommon where there is a pothole and a utility company is involved for there to be correspondence between the council and the utility council about it prior to the incident, which is good because it can help establish things such as how long the defect was there prior to the incident which may be important to a claim succeeding. You may initially get a denial of liability but do not be put off if this happens. Also, you may get the council and the utility company blaming each other which is good because ultimately you will probably get a settlement from one or both. Hope this is of some help.
