i am planning to spend a week or two this spring for cycling and i am searching a nice place to do it. My friend said that scotland has much to offer for road cyclists, although he doesnt cycle himself, and i would be interested to hear if that is true. i would be interested in taking part in group rides and experience scotland generally too. if you can provide me with information about these things it would be great and i would prefer email if possible. hannuwilliam@gmail.com

Hannuwilliam, if you do find yourself in Edinburgh on a weekend with a road bike and want a group to join in with, check Edinburgh Road Club's "what's on" page, it details the club's organised training rides. Non-members are welcome to join these so long as they are familiar with cycling in a group in a safe manner.

Hi Hannuwilliam
There's lots of great cycling country in East Lothian just to the east of Edinburgh.
Take a train out to North Berwick and ride south for a great day of exploration taking in East Linton, Stenton, Garvald, Gifford - and Innerwick if you've the legs.
Can I recommend the wonderful Spokes maps of Edinburgh and the Lothians? Buy them in Edinburgh bike shops when you get here.
Enjoy your stay.Posted 12 years ago # -
I agree. If you want to enjoy a great variety of roads then head East. Go South over Lammermuirs if you like hills and a view.
Group rides in Edinburgh are here - they do vary immensely.
Edinburgh Ride InfoI read your request as from someone who has lightweight road bike. Maybe though you just mean cycling on the road as opposed to off-road? I've done some guided tours for people using their own bikes too (as opposed to specialist ones).

i have been cycling now for 8 years and have also competed in Finnish national cycling cup. Nowadays i prefer to ride on road. I have a Trek Madonen 5.5 and i thought that i would take it with me to Edinburgh. Although if there are a possibilities to rent a bike that could do aswell.
it would be really nice to take part in organised group rides because ofcourse i am not so familiar with the area and routes.

hannuwiliam, In addition to the group rides, I'd encourage you to book in on one of laidback's custom tours. you'd get a chance to ride a cool bike (or your own), and also the best guided cycle tour of Edinburgh.

i have to think about those custom tours. do anyone have any idea where to rent a bike and how much they cost.

I think Edinburgh's hire companies cater more for day trippers (around the city) and people wanting to try mountain biking.
If you want a bike the whole time you are here - and one you are familiar using - it will probably be better (and cheaper) to bring your own.
Edinburgh isn't too bad for bike theft - mostly MTBs and/or from student areas. Check that place you are staying in Edinburgh has secure bike storage - shouldn't be a problem.
You will need a decent lock, which you might want to buy here if travel weight is an issue.
