    Hi All.

I'm on the hunt for a front pannier and whatever piece of metal I need to attach it to my front fork (!).

Just need the one really - for putting my daughters pink rucksac in for the ride into town (better than it hanging off the handlebars - feels a little distracting).

Hope you can help - let me know what you have and what you fancy for it. Thanks, JC.

You'll need a front rack - check if you have necessary fittings as a lot of designs require a specific mounting hole half-way up the fork, and it isn't that common on non-touring specific bikes. There are of course other options for mounting a front rack.

Oh and front panniers on just one side aren't that clever as they make the wheel flop over. You really should have the load balanced (although you'd get away with just weight of one child's rucksack, you might not if you started putting your shopping in it too)

They can be quite pricey (new). You might want to consider something like a decaleur rack to put the rucksack on? It's sorta halfway between a basket and a front rack and you could just bungee the rucksack onto it. Advantage is you don't need to buy the pannier and also load distribution not an issue as it's centrally mounted

You will occasionally find lightweight "shopper" type front racks at the Bike Station, rescued form old Raleigh 20s and the like.

Most front racks will take a "regular" pannier. Front-specific ones tend to just be smaller versions for when you're fully loaded and don't want the toes overlapping the pannier.

If you have vee / cantilever brakes, perhaps this might work for you?

I have put one of those on the black Globe hybrid and it's great for lightish loads. Bungee a bag of shopping on, kid's school bag, stuff sac, etc.

For panniers I'd use low-rider racks on front forks though.

Years (10, I think) ago, for touring using my mountain bike, and obviously on a budget, I bought:

    Halford's lowrider front pannier racks

    and..,

    EBC front pannier x 2

I don't think the pannier rack has changed since I bought it, and I think £15 must be approximately what I paid.

It was attached using the supplied P-clips, did the job fairly well and I left the racks on the bike for years only removing them fairly recently when the bike became my leave-at-the-station bike and I removed most of the bits that I could from it.

When I got a touring bike (Revolution Country Traveller) I tried to fit the rack, but the mounting
holes didn't seem to line up with those on the bike. Need to look into this one again...

The pannier bag doesn't look like it's changed much; although I seem to remember paying that much (perhaps less) for a set of two bags.
They're not great bags to be honest; don't seem to be particulalry well designed and have a slightly awkward moutning system. The new version might be better of course.
The bags aren't huge but I can fit my work laptop into one with room for waterproofs etc.

I've modified the bags slightly so that they fit the lowrider front rack on my Birdy.

Think there's a pic of them here (can't see Flickr from work):

    Hi All

Many thanks for all the great ideas. I think the mini pannier rack is the one for me! Best wishes and thanks, James.
