  1. S'not me, for once. I've got previous, breaking my arm and tearing my cruciate ligament, but neither rendered me as immobile as my other half is just now.

Walking on Sunday she slipped on some mud and fell on top of her left leg, whcih gave way with a horrible 'crack'. She has a spiral fracture just above the ankle, and is in plaster for an estimated 6 months weeks.

On Sunday she had virtually no pain and was remarkably calm - yesterday it all hit home a bit, and the pain started. I do remember that from my arm and knee, the constant ache that makes you feel utterly ill. At least with the arm I could move about and make one-armed tea and so on; and with my knee movement (as long as it wasn't violent) was positively encouraged (if painful).

With both the pain subsided to manageable levels after a couple of weeks, but just wondering if anyone had experience of this kind of fracture, and recovery times from it, that I can pass on?

Fortunately she has an appointment at the fracture clinic on Thursday to answer more questions (A&E was rushed and a bit chaotic) and move to a lighter-weight fancy cast.

OOH!! Spiral fracture bad (not in the good way) Had a pal spiral fracture his leg when we were skating at livingston skate park many moons ago. He was out of action and in plaster for a good 6 months and had to walk with a stick for another year....

Probably not what you wanted to hear......

  3. And not something I'll be telling her. No, at the hospital it was stated that the bone hadn't separated - not a major break, primarily because no weight had been put on the leg at all after she broke it. The bone hasn't shifted at all, so prognosis was just the 6 weeks in plaster.

Obviously doctors have been known to get this wrong, but from what I've read about spiral fractures it's the ones that separate that cause problems (I think cos they're difficult to knit back together).

Sorry to hear that. My eldest daughter broke her femur when she and her partner fell in a school sports three legged race. It wasn't a spiral fracture - greenstick - but she was in traction for five weeks. I think she refused to take pain killers after a couple of weeks so the pain must have eased off by then. The fracture clinic imo will be able to answer your questions better than A&E.

Ah well my pal had the complete bone sticking out of the leg surgery and pins job...... I learnt a valuable lesson that day. NEVER drink 2 litres of cider and drop into the big bowl,....... it probably won't be ok! I said and meant 6 months and 1 year. strangely he gave up skateboarding after that.......

Sorry anth, no experience of bone breaking, but wish her a speedy recovery with minimal discomfort.

I assume thankfully she was wearing high-viz, otherwise it could have been a lot worse.
