From George V park to the North Edinburgh cycle path network, joins it at Tesco. Though it means you don't ride past The Bike Chain..

Kim - Rodney St tunnel not like the Innocent Railway or even the Hailes Tunnel in that it is very short, but a classic example of the genre if you just like tunnels.

Just been into east side bikes, nice little shop. Frames are pretty dear though.

RJ @The "we do not lend tools" sign, though understandable, is a tad offputting.
Do any other bike shops lend tools. Most I find offer a repair service and by lending tools would be doing themselves out of business. I did ask them about the possibility of purchasing a tool to change the bottom bracket on my old steel frame bike, and they were honest enough to tell me that it was so expensive as to be prohibitive for the number of times I would actually use it. I never thought for one moment to ask to borrow theirs or indeed even noticed the sign. I have always found them very helpful.
The Bike Co-op is overpriced in my opinion for almost everything.
Bike Trax is my favourite shop, and I find the staff most helpful.
Velo Ecosse I have only used a couple of time but have had a good experience, but they are busy too being on the main drag, and probably do well from the Bike Co-op being over the road and up bit.
The Bicycle Works, I have no complaints, the staff are helpful even when very busy, in my experience.
As you can tell I am a southsider too....and cannot comment on shops int north. However, I have been known to cross Princes street on numerous occasions, and I know the Rodney Street tunnel, which incidentally has not actually been open that long, if memory serves me right. I have even been down to Granton and cycle regularly along the path from Leith itself, having gone round Portybella and through Leith links. I did used to, in a former life, live in north Edinburgh but that was eons ago, and cycled then too.

A big thumbs up for the Bicycle Works. I had (another) spoke go on the dodgy Edinburgh roads yesterday. I limped into their shop and they were able to repair it that afternoon for just £6.60. Plus they are now able to service my alfine hub for a very reasonable sum. Great place.

Bain's Bicycles - Blimey, for several minutes I thought I was never going to get outside again! Neil's shop in Newhaven used to be called Claymore Cycles but otherwise seems to be much the same. Although I went to the shop the other day, I didn't really manage to transact any business while I was there. It's full of bikes that I wasn't sure were being sold, being mended, or being archived; there was the usual prominent truing stand, pillar drill and so on, and a wonderful cast metal till with a hand crank and pop-up flags and everything. We talked a lot about spoking patterns and folding bikes and invisiblebikes, and what appeared to be about a hundred completely unrelated matters. He does build very nice wheels, though.

amir - I can top that. I broke a spoke on my way into work so I called in to BG Bikes and Blades in Portobello on the way home and they fixed it while I waited for £1. Brill.

Ah Bains! you can pay him in custard powder you know. Thought he was long gone but i may have to pay him a visit. Claymore used to open at 8pm on wednesdays only as far as I can remember.

8pm that is late to open was it for posties coming off the backshift needing new tubes? would explain why phone wasn';t answered all day (oh no, that was monday and not Claymore). Mr Bain knows his gears

Yeah what he don't know about sturmey archer ain't worth knowing.
The dude that ran it when it was claymore was called Ian. We used to call him the Captain.Strong silent type....NEVER saw him smile. When I was couriering in the early '90s he was the only bike shop i used. VERY cheap and a great wheel builder. used to sit there and watch him building wheels til it was time for him to build mine....then sit and watch him build mine.....then cycle home on them and get up for work the next day.Good to hear that Mr Bains is still going though.........even if he is mad as a box of frogs. ( in a good way)

Went to the Bicycle Repar Man the other day in my seemingly unendng quest for winter longs. The really nice and helpfull guy was in, and they had good, well priced stock (lusso and 'funkier') and the changing room was the coolest Ive ever seen. Basically its just the lower basement of the shop, bare walls full of hoops and tyres and bikes in various states of repair, the staffs clothing drying upon a thin nylon orange line, some cardboard to stand on and the distinct feelin there might be a guy in a full rubber bodysuit locked in a truck somewhere. It was brilliant! Only one problem. no mirror.
very please with my new longs too, on the ride yesterday they were perfect, I could have been cycling in spring! ;)
The Bike Chain are great too, friendly knowledgeable staff, good range of stuff and a very impressive range of bikes you wont find elsewhere. Dressing room was a bit boring tho.

Oi!! I'll have you know that we got some Daylight Balanced Tubes for that changing room so you could make sure the colour went with your complexion!

The Bike Chain redux - Gets my Customer Service Award of the Day, closely followed by the guy in Lush who looks like Gok Wan. Compare and contrast with the award for Miserable & Surly Service, which goes to a certain model shop on Lothian Road whose staff seemed completely uninterested in helping me.

I endured years of this sort of service from that particular establishment and their rivals ont he Maybury Road in my teenage years, even though I was spending 90% of my pocket and Herald & Post round money in them.
I never did finish that Hasegawa 1/48 Phantom FG.1 that was my final attempt at high-end modelling. I think it's still in my parent's attic waiting patiently to be completed.

Went to see the new shop 'Pedals' today, He is a very personable young man with a lovely clean new shop. He gave me some very competitive quotes for basic servicing and said he will have a pricelist online soon. I think he is still waiting for his CCE account tho :)

ok, not actually edinburgh but, cycle to work voucher arrives for wife, goes to collect bike, and other access ordrd previously. these included, high mount rear car carrier.Already checked with staff member that this item woulkd fit both wifes saloon and my estate cars. Yes of course no problems, great we will have one.£45 or so. Asks guy to fit said carrier to my wifes car as i was neededto go to work,certainly sir, just check the compatability site on computah, guess what, after the voucher had been prossesed they discover that it wont fit any of our cars.scratching of heads, is there anything else that you could take instead ? NO !Long story short, very juinor guy stayed in his own time and fitted £160 ish worth of roof bars and bike clamps to my wifes car.How can two extremes of service exist in the same place, first guy didnt give a hoot, just get the sale, last guy, in yhe rain,on his own time,fixed the problem. Granted the manager ok,d the upgrade but he went home ! No names given but cycle to work doesnt really use small independant retailers.

Just had my mtb wheel repaired by Pedals on Barclay Place. Had to get a spoke replaced and the wheel trued, dropped it off at 12 was ready to pick up at 4, not short of work but he managed to swap some stuff around. Nice friendly service, £15 including parts,highly recommended.
