Planning to head across the Forth bridge tomorrow on a family trip, then head west towards Limekilns. I've been across the bridge recently, but on the right hand side going north to Aberdour. Does anyone know, is the left hand path still open? If so, is the path still open leading to Rosyth or is it closed/diverted for access road works for the new bridge?

  2. Can't help on the specific questions, but heading west from the right hand side is easy enough. Once down the bottom of the slip road hang a left onto the roundabout under the road and your mother's brother is most certainly Robert.

Of course a 'family trip' might mean you want to avoid potentially tricky road sections in which case ignore everything I've just said, and someone who knows what they're talking about should be along soon :)

I think Bridge Inspector Crampton is best placed to answer this particular query

I've not ridden on the west side since they closed it but they are not at the stage of closing the road to and from the the Brook hotel (which overlooks the Forth on the left of the bridge) and west North Queensferry as you cross over heading north.

I would suggest you cycle on the east side and then head down past the layby towards Ferry Toll. At the foot of the hill as you approach the roundabout, there is a crossing over to the west side of the M90. Its signposted and you can cross very easily to a pavement under the M90 flyover, then cross the off ramp onto the west side heading for Limekilns. When I cross & I have children with me I head to the middle of the road and wave children across before continuing when they are safely across. I know this is a major on ramp and off ramp but I beleive drivers who see children being hearded across have good visibility on both junctions and won't rush at you.

Last time I crossed the bridge was in June and the west side was open (Lepra, St Andrew's cycle).

Shortly after leaving the bridge, just as you reach the layby there is a cycle lane offshoot that takes you steeply downhill and brings you out on the North Queensferry access road, here.

It is remarkably steep with a big fence at the bottom, so take care, particulalry if it is wet.

The west side of the bridge is closed to all traffic now so only the east side is open to Peds and cycles.

Thanks for the advice folks. @cb, I know how to get from the Forth bridge down the wee steep path, just am aware there are works and DaveC has confirmed the west side is closed. @DaveC, sounds like a possibility, if a tad hairy!

In any case, the trip is off now as my other half came down with a stinker of a cold today. By the time there's another window of opportunity (ie. I'm available, missus available, son not at school/weekend classes/parties) no doubt the Forth bridge situation will have changed once again! Sorry to waste everyone's time.
