It's not often that I find myself coming down on the side of taxi drivers. Strange times.

Yes. On the whole, most other major stations are not accessed via a long and rather steep ramp. In fact none that I can think of.

Taxis were (are?) underground at Euston.

    Preston?

I think the taxis are safer and less of a nuisance inside the station than they are lurking on Waverley bridge or Market Street, mixing it up with the tour buses and airlink bus.

    Another small victory for terrorism.

    "Another small victory for terrorism."

    Quite

London bombing - people with rucksacks

Glasgow Airport attempt - large car.

Presume rucksacks won't be routinely searched???

Or complete ban on vehicles entering Waverley - that barrier wouldn't stop anything driven at it.

  8. What about suicide bombers with bombs strapped to their person?!?! Surely we should be banning people from the station?!?!? Will nobody think of the children! etc etc etc

They could drop the bomb from North Bridge. We should ban North bridge.

  10. They could put a bomb on a train...

"They could put a bomb on a train... "

Then if we divert all trains around the south sub that will keep the station safe.

I was in the main Waverley concourse, years ago, when someone lobbed a brick off North Bridge. Much raining down of shattered glass.

So also need to ban bricks and glass.

I wonder if the new panes of glass are shatter proof? Perhaps someone should ask... I can imagine their faces dropping right at the end of the re glacing... Oh no we've installed the wrong sort of glass £££££££££

  13. So. We've established that taxis, cars, people, trains, glass, bricks and North Bridge should all be banned from Waverley Station.

I've never heard of a bomber blowing up water randomly, I propose we flood the station with water. May I also propose that 'Waverley' is a rubbish name, and the more apt North Loch be used? Actually, that's a bit wordy, how about Norloch?

"I wonder if the new panes of glass are shatter proof?"

They are actually some kind of special clear plastic sheet. I spent a few months working on that roof when I was in the Height safety profession.

"AN emergency bid is being launched at the City Chambers to halt plans to ban taxis and private cars from Waverley Station.

Labour’s transport spokeswoman on the city council Lesley Hinds lodged a motion at today’s transport committee calling for urgent talks with Network Rail to prevent the closure."

"The Evening News revealed last week how the station would be closed to cars and taxis permanently by July in response to terror threats ahead of the London Olympics."

    Perceived, or actual, one wonders?

Or complete ban on vehicles entering Waverley - that barrier wouldn't stop anything driven at it.

This is a little more concerning. Are they planning to ban all vehicles, including bicycles? And motorbike parking in Waverley is currently next to nonexistent, and the rack on Waverley Bridge gets very full.

Arrelcat: "Are they planning to ban all vehicles, including bicycles?"

I can see that happening - it's okay to take a bike onto a train in North Berwick, it's just against the rules to get off with it at Edinburgh.

That article flips between using 'guidelines' and 'legislation' for the excuse, with only Network Rail using the latter. All a bit dodgy.

Fastidious, jobsworth organisations like to try and pull this one to justify their unpopular decisions. This is guidelines, not legislation. Nobody has created a law that says you cannot have vehicle access into mainline railway stations because of the olmpics. There are however guidelines that recommends this. Guidelines should be applied on a by-risk basis. There is not a statutory obligation to comply with them.

But at the end of the day, Network Rail own and operate the station and it's up to them who can and can not drive into it.

Needles to say, this won't apply to their own white vans or contractors.

chdot said "What happened to the Olympics???"

    PMSL!!

A company spokesman previously said the traffic ban had to happen before the Olympics, although that appears to no longer be the case. When asked if the reference to the Olympics was a “red herring”, Mr Poulton said: “Yes, that’s correct.”

Waverley ban on taxis ‘is an overreaction’

    Published on Wednesday 7 March 2012 12:07

A PROPOSED security-inspired ban on cars and taxis at Waverley station has been described as an overreaction by the SNP’s Edinburgh Southern MSP, Jim Eadie.

Since the taxis are continually moving through and well clear of the ,ain circulation area the risk is very low - it would move to Waverley Bridge and Princes Street, with a ban and the other hazards on the road would increase. What would make Waverly work though is a through cab road from New Street and out onto Waverley Bridge, and no stopping traffic - just setting down/picking up and move on.

THE owners of Edinburgh Waverley are considering introducing golf-style buggies to transport elderly and disabled passengers across the station if their plans to ban all cars proceed.

On a trip down ECML last week it seems both York and Darlington stations still have taxis and cars under the station roof.

As indeed does Perth station. But then, everyone knows that with the Festival, Castle, and the Parly Edinburgh's a prime terror target for.....er, well we may not know who exactly, but it's a target in the way that all those non-Festival, non-Castle, and non-Parly places aren't.

There, now can we get on with building more retail outlets in the station with all that extra space, er, I mean improving security measures?

FWIW I do think taxis and cars should be banned from the station to improve the overall usage and 'experience' of the station by passengers, but let's not use terrorism as an excuse.
