  1. Need to check Bike Week dates and so on and try to tie it into that - mind you, random standalone event can be fun. I'll check tonight and start putting things in motion.

The official Bike Week will take place 16th - 24th June 2012. Registration dates will be announced shortly. In the mean time, read more about our partners and how you can continue cycling throughout the year.

Assuming like previous years, events don't have to be IN Bike Week to get the free 3rd party insurance.

I swapped off the Marathon Winters today for the Kojaks.

So smooth, so supple (even though they're quite cheaply constructed at £12 compared with a £60 tub) - and I think I might have been using most of an extra gear, too.

Ive found the (28c from memory) gatorskins easy to get on and off
seem pretty tough,as they survided my pothole hit with just soe evidence of the 'threads' in the sidewall breaking
had Vittoria Zaffiro before, but one blew on a pothole
bit faster than the Gatorskins but poor in the wet
havent suffered badly with punctures on either
I got a 2nd hand set of Marathons but never got round to fitting them to the hybred
would have needed mudgaurd fettling or even a larger size

NB: I have excluded all my spoke punctures from my dodgy rear wheel

Took the Schwalbe Snow Studs wheelset* off the hybrid yesterday, back to the Marathon Pluses. Rolling nice and quiet, and with much less effort now!

*Bought a second hand wheelset for the winter tyres: saved a lot of hassle swapping tyres on the same rims!

@crowriver a 2nd set of winter wheels is my plan
though disc hubs on 700c rims means picking up a cheap wheel isnt as easy

@custard, very true. Some (relatively) inexpensive new wheelsets around mind: could treat yourself to new ones or other alternatives and relegate the old ones to winter use?

Otherwise these might go for less than the BIN price...

I'll not be buying anything just now :o
my credit card is still smoldering from a new helmet,a workstand and hope X2 brakes
and thats just the bike stuff
being off work sick and bored is painful on the bank funds lol

Back on topic, there's this on how to fit a Marathon Plus tyre on Youtube. It's by the distinctive-looking chap from Spa Cycles who you see in adverts in the CTC magazine.

I have a theory that if you've got rim brakes, your rim gets circumferential scratches that grip the tyre, whereas if you have disc brakes the rim is smooth (and often coated with dry mud) so the tyres go on easier.

He's the master wheel builder no less! That's how I do it, but without the toeclip straps: must try that sometime. Can't believe he does it all with thumbs though, I use plastic tyre levers for the last bit. I'm reassured that he uses the same 'inner tube in the tyre first' method that I do. A number of bike mechanics have told me that is the wrong way. I still do it though, no pinch flats so far...

Im often torn on the tube in first or get the tyre on then slide the tube in

After the side wall went on my Gatorskins last winter I went up to Gator Hardshells, which while bomb proof and not that different once you got going in a straight direction were just not that good in cornering.

Back to Gatorskin 23s this winter and so much better for it.

Yeah, you'll ruin your fingers trying to get them over the rim first, even second time, but either get a friend or a hair drier to help. Both work.

Thanks for the YouTube link Greenroofer. Must try that method. He does make it look very easy.

I've never put the tube in first; was never taught to do it that way. I'll berthing that too next time.

@crowriver: he's a little old man who works with his hands and has probably forgotten what a mutant that makes him.

Until you get to 25-stone strongman monsters who take baths in liquid steroids, you won't find a group with a more powerful set of fingers and thumbs.
