Research by Sustrans finds 56% of people believe cycling in built-up areas is dangerous and 70% seek a 20mph speed limit

That would be the same 56% who never cycle and always drive, presumably. Interesting that there is so much support for lower speed limits: that is a surprise!

The lower limit was particularly popular in Scotland and Northern Ireland, at 81 and 80 per cent respectively, and least welcome in the East of England, where 64 per cent expressed agreement - although that is still two thirds of the people polled.

Yet, when they try to introduce blanket 20mph zones in, say, residential areas in the South of Edinburgh, suddenly the objections start coming in and the Council caves. Clearly Lothian Buses and the police trump 81% of the population as far as CEC is concerned.
