  1. Very odd. Thought I'd picked up a puncture on Saturday morning. The tyre was just suddenly very rim-bangingly soft. Broke my tyre levers trying to get the tyre off, so used the stop-every-now-and-then-to-pump-it-up method of getting home.

Yesterday I went to sort it, and found there was still air in it, around the same as when I'd parked it in the garage. So I pumped it up to about 100psi and checked a few hours later. Still rock solid.

Checked this morning. Still rock solid.

Ride to work, rim bangingly soft just as I get to the office. My guess is faulty valve... Going to chuck in the spare tube I think.

Be careful - can sometimes be a real puncture - best check the tyre when you change.

  3. Oh yeah, was planning on checking it (and would have changed it yesterday, but had a million and one other things to do, so the chance to see if it would be okay today was too tempting). Actually planning on swapping on the CX tyres tonight anyway.

    Just seems odd! :)

Anth, thought I had similar 3-4 months ago - went through 6 (!!) tubes and bought a new gatorskin over the course of one weekend.

Part of the problem was the rim profile / relatively skinny tyres and using metal levers - getting more and more frustrated made me trash the tubes - silly really, should have taken a breath.

I 'think' the original problem was not a real flat, shouldnt have been looking for non-existent tyre problems but actually the valve. Have kept the 'old' tyre!

Anth - I've had this before (twice) and on both occasions it was the tyre wall beginning to come away from the bead that was to blame. It was invisible to both eye and fingertip inspections and I went through numrous tubes and re-inflations that deflated ever more frequently until the tubes finally blew up, opening the gash enough for me to find it.

Re tyre levers, I have the Lezyne micro levers. They are milled from tough and light aluminium bilet but are beautifully polished so that they don't knick the rim or the bead or the tube.
