"Council chiefs rule out HGV ban when tram starts"

But a council report due to be considered by councillors on Tuesday said that an HGV ban “cannot be recommended” because police say it would have to be “self-enforcing”.
Sounds familiar!
I think it's about time the traditional bobby on the beat was put back on a bicycle as they used to be, instead of cruising around in a panda car. Maybe then L&BP's finest would be more willing to enforce an HGV ban and 20mph limits on so-called 'arterial' routes...

I think its more a case of lack of resources. I friend or ours works in West lothian and say regularly they have 4 staff for Bathgate to Broxburn. Imagine having more than 2 shouts? i.e. two fights or one fight and a car crash, thats everyone tied up for a few house while they deal then process the paperwork.
LBP do place bobbies on the street in Edinburgh though as I regularly see them when I'm in town.

@DaveC, maybe so, yet somehow resources are magically found, in large numbers, to police football matches, especially when one of the Glasgow teams pays a visit. Imagine if the police decided to turn around and say to the Premier League that the ban on hooligans, violence, etc. (never mind 'sectarian' chanting) outside/inside the grounds would have to be 'self-enforcing'!

An ANPR system could quite easily be put in to catch any offenders and the cooncil could then rake in the ticket reciepts.
Much more amusing would be a weight-activated rising bollard or road blocker as miscreants attempting to speed through are usually very surprised when the bollard comes up underneath their vehicle and writes it off. They won't make the same mistake again.

Football clubs pay for police around/at grounds, but police say doesn't cover wider costs of policing football.
So more money from clubs, less 'preventative' policing, matches played behind 'closed doors' - or more of the same.
It's one thing for police to say they are not prepared to police, but why does CEC always (seem) to just accept that??

Indeed, sounds a bit too much like 'can't be bothered to even think about alternative solutions'.

On the Police subject and to get it OT to cycling, I noticed last Wednesday that the "diversion" through the tram works at Russell Road had been widened out onto the roadway, providing a full pavement and an equivalent width of road for cyclists.
"Excellent" thought I, must finally have decided that they don't need quite as much room in which to park white vans and are giving some back. It still left plenty of van park space on the rest of the road (it's quite a wise road after all)
Then a big squad of Police came through and I recalled the office conversation about the Hearts vs. Celtic match that evening.
So my analysis of the situation is Police have the power to request it be widened out for "crowd safety" reasons, but nobody gives a damn about providing acceptable pedestrian and cycling diversions to roadworks.
