As one would expect, there was a strong local presence in Berlin, including Christian Petzold's excellent Barbara. An understated yet absorbing affair, this is set in East Germany in 1980. Having applied for an exit visa to the West, a Berlin doctor is punished with "exile" to a small country town. While she plans her escape, the local doctor does everything he can to please her. But is his attention kindness, love or surveillance? Petzold's muse Nina Hoss is as brilliant as ever, making aloofness sexy and enigmatic; around her, the director builds tension out of the most mundane things as a bicycle ride and a canteen lunch.

Still below from the Bulgarian film Селянинът с Колелото (A Peasant on a Bicycle), 1974, starring Georgi Georgiev-Getz. It has been suggested (rather sarcastically) that I resemble the protagonist. No such romantic episodes have ensued as with this character, however! For plot details etc. see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selyaninat_s_Koleloto

Which is the one with male nudity in the first 5 minutes? That's the only bit I remember. It was definately about cycling though.

    I've remembered, it's American Flyers.

There is Project A which features an awesome bike chase (and Jackie almost getting killed by falling off a tower and landing on his head).

    Breaking Away - great movie

won oscar for original screenplay 1979 [various other nominations], BAftas, Golden Globes.

Belleville Rendezvous - cracking, silent animation, french Sylvan Chomet the director then moved to Edinburgh and did The Illusionist [no cycling]. He has left North BErwick now as picnics spoiled by changeable weather.

What's the film in which Italian children only have handlebars and pretend to be cyclists? And there must be a Hitchcock with a bike.

    A good double bill --

Tilda Swinton cycling right round the Berlin Wall back in 1988:
