As one would expect, there was a strong local presence in Berlin, including Christian Petzold's excellent Barbara. An understated yet absorbing affair, this is set in East Germany in 1980. Having applied for an exit visa to the West, a Berlin doctor is punished with "exile" to a small country town. While she plans her escape, the local doctor does everything he can to please her. But is his attention kindness, love or surveillance? Petzold's muse Nina Hoss is as brilliant as ever, making aloofness sexy and enigmatic; around her, the director builds tension out of the most mundane things as a bicycle ride and a canteen lunch.
