Chances are most people reading this will say "who".

Well he's someone who knows rather a lot about cycling, cycle infrastructure and what might get more 'normal' people cycling.

If this these things interest you, read http://hembrow.eu/blog

An extract from the last(?) post.

    "
I've attempted to build something which was a useful resource for cycling campaigners across the English speaking world and everywhere else that should be using the Netherlands as a reference for how to implement quality cycling infrastructure, but nearly always is not. There was a dearth of accurate information, and abundance of misinformation, about Dutch cycling policy in the English language. I sought to improve this situation.

    ...

While some people from commercial organisations took the time to tell me that my work was "valuable", never did this "value" extend to offers of payment when they asked me to work for them. Some people seem to take a delight in pointing out that they have "no budget" to pay others while they themselves draw a regular salary.

    "

If that sounds at all 'bitter' I think it's justified.

It's sometimes a fine line between being a 'campaigner' and actually being enough of an expert that people attempt to put into practice some of your ideas without understanding enough about 'what works in the Netherlands' - and that it might not work if directly copied into the UK!

  3. I know the feeling well, and I did very little in comparison with Dave. Bought a basket from him once (he's a basket weaver to trade...) and he's a thoroughly decent bloke.

That's a pity, and it's a loss that the archive was not left online, there were some very interesting and insightful articles on the blog. It's also an intelligent voice lost to cycling advocacy's presence on the web.

The economics of blogging is a thorny one: he quite rightly points out that unless you have a strategy at the outset, or a lucky break, blogging is usually a labour of love. Clearly there is a point where being pleased that a blog is getting attention turns into frustration that people are using material without permission.

As for the labour involved in hand deleting spam comments, it is usually easier to just set the blog so that comments are not allowed. It thereby defeats the original features of blogging as an interactive platform, but the internet is an imperfect system as we all know.

However, it increasingly became apparent that commercial organisations including magazines and newspapers, other websites and transport related organisations... ...were taking an interest in my work. In some cases my text and photos were copied without asking me and without giving any credit...Photos have been taken from our website and edited to remove our watermark image. I find this all quite abusive

I have been there and understand completely how he feels.

David Hembrow has written a new post or two on his new, almost-the-same-as-the-old blog.

February blog closure, in which he explains at length some of what went on behind the scenes. He's followed this up with an extensive note on copyright.

And now, a post about cycle spending in the UK.

    Thanks Arellcat.

Been meaning to look and post.

It seems that rather than "delete" everything he has kept it and now made clear his (perfectly reasonable) 'terms of re-/use'

I think everything now has new URLs so links from elsewhere would have to be redone(?)

Although there's a new domain, the old blogspot one still redirects to it, so afaics links will still work

Thanks Arellcat, I'm greatly cheered. It was a black day for me when his blog disappeared. It's my main hope for the future.
